Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are seven Chaos Emeralds, and they come in a variety of colours. Which of these is NOT a Chaos Emerald colour?

Answer: Orange

The Chaos Emeralds come in the following colours: red, yellow, cyan, blue, green, purple and grey. The colour scheme is based on the three primary colours, mixtures of the three primary colours (green, cyan and purple), and grey, a mixture of all colours.
2. Chaos Emeralds are often obtained by completing Special Stages. Which of these objects took you to the Special Stage in the Mega Drive version of 'Sonic 2'?

Answer: A star post, but only if you have at least 50 rings

In the original 'Sonic the Hedgehog' for the Mega Drive, star posts acted as markers - if you died after touching one, you wold return to that point on your next go. In 'Sonic 2', touching a star post with at least 50 rings and jumping into the star circle that appeared would spirit you away to the Special Zone, with a Chaos Emerald waiting at the edge.

The giant ring at the end of the level was in 'Sonic the Hedgehog', and the giant rings hidden throughout the level in 'Sonic 3'.
3. In the first two 'Sonic the Hedgehog' games for the Game Gear and Master System, the emeralds were hidden within the levels, but 'Sonic Chaos' introduced Special Stages. Which character(s) could access the Special Stages?

Answer: Sonic

If you played as Sonic, getting 100 rings would spirit you away to the Special Stage, and to the next act once you had completed it. This would either involve flying on rocket boots, jumping on a variety of platforms and using pogo sticks, or mazes (the purple one for the final stage was a nightmare!) Tails could not access the Special Stages, but on the plus side, he was able to rack up a lot of lives.
4. The Master Emerald is a particularly powerful emerald, with the ability to nullify the power of the Chaos Emeralds. It is housed on the Floating Island, guarded by Knuckles the Echidna. In 'Sonic & Knuckles', which villain used the Master Emerald to power themselves up in the final boss fight?

Answer: Mecha Sonic

'Sonic & Knuckles' is set slightly after the timeline of 'Sonic 3'. The Floating Island has been colonised by EggRobos, a bunch of flying badniks that look like robotic versions of Dr Robotnik. Instead of the Doomsday Zone, your final zone as Knuckles is the Sky Sanctuary Zone, where Mecha Sonic recharges himself with the Master Emerald. Unfortunately for him, he cannot hold onto the power and has to keep recharging himself, and Knuckles is eventually able to defeat him and get the Master Emerald back.
5. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails all have the ability to go into Super mode when they get all seven Chaos Emeralds, and Hyper mode when they get all seven Super Emeralds in 'Sonic & Knuckles'.

Answer: False

Sonic and Knuckles can go super when they collect all the Chaos Emeralds, and when they collect the Super Emeralds - the upgraded Chaos Emeralds from 'Sonic & Knuckles', they can go into Hyper mode. Tails, however, does not get a Hyper mode, and has to collect the Chaos Emeralds AND the Super Emeralds in order for him to go super. On the plus side, Super Tails does get an army of birds which act like his personal defence squad.
6. In 'Sonic Rush', Sonic encounters a cat called Blaze, who comes from a parallel universe. Blaze's universe also has its own set of magical emeralds, which Dr Robotnik also tries to steal. What are these emeralds called?

Answer: Sol Emeralds

Blaze the Cat is the guardian of the Sol Emeralds. Like the Chaos Emeralds, the Sol Emeralds possess incredible power and enable users to travel through time and space, or achieve a super transformation. They can also convert thoughts into power, which Blaze uses to restore them after Dr Robotnik and Dr Eggman Nega, Dr Robotnik's counterpart from Blaze's universe, drain them of their power.

Instead of collecting them in Special Stages, you have to fight a boss in order to get each emerald.
7. In 'Sonic Adventure', it is revealed that the original guardian of the Master Emerald was a watery creature called Chaos. Hundreds of years ago, Chaos became Perfect Chaos, went on a rampage and massacred a clan of echidnas from Knuckles' tribe. Which young female echidna sacrificed her life to seal Chaos within the Master Emerald?

Answer: Tikal

Tikal was from the same tribe as Knuckles, and a pacifist who befriended Chaos and the little blue creatures known as the Chao (who you have to raise as a side quest). When her father Pachacamac and his tribe tried to steal the Master Emerald and use its power in a war against a rival clan, Tikal was trampled almost to death as she tried to stop them. The attack on the temple where the emerald was stored angered Chaos and caused it to become Perfect Chaos and go on a rampage, killing Pachacamac and the other echidnas. Tikal begged the Master Emerald to stop Chaos, and sacrificed herself by sealing both herself and Chaos within the emerald. Both she and Chaos were released when Dr Robotnik shatters the Master Emerald, and she appears throughout the game as a spirit guide.

(As for the other answers, Maria is Dr Robotnik's cousin, Sally is one of the main characters in the Archie comics and the cartoon known as 'Sonic the Hedgehog' / 'Sonic SatAM', and Julie-Su is an echidna character from the Archie universe.)
8. While the earlier 'Sonic' games had Sonic going Super when he got all the emeralds, the concept of Chaos Control - by harnessing the energy of a Chaos Emerald - was introduced with the character Shadow the Hedgehog. In which game did this ability first appear?

Answer: Sonic Adventure 2

Chaos Control enables the user to teleport, stop time and even change the fabric of reality with the power of a Chaos Emerald (which Dr Robotnik does in 'Sonic Advance 3'). The more emeralds a Chaos Control user has, the stronger their power is. Sonic, Shadow and Silver (the hedgehog from the future introduced in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2006') are all able to use Chaos Control. Fake emeralds can also be used for Chaos Control.

When Shadow initially appears in 'Sonic Adventure 2', he uses Chaos Control to escape from Sonic, and both he and Sonic use it while fighting each other later in the game.
9. In 'Sonic Generations', the Chaos Emeralds are separated and dragged into the area known as the White Space, and end up being drained of their power, becoming colourless. Which character finds the white/grey emerald?

Answer: Silver

Silver finds the white/grey emerald, Shadow finds the yellow one, and Classic Metal Sonic finds the purple one. The White Space is a hub world that exists between dimensions, and the areas that the Time Eater has stolen are transported there and turned white. Completing the zones stored there will restore their colours and free various friends of Sonic who have been petrified. Both Sonics - the Classic one and the modern one - have to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and place them into the gears at the Time Eater's lair in order to stop the Time Eater.
10. Sonic dies in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2006', and the Chaos Emeralds are used to bring him back to life.

Answer: True

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2006' is the first game in the series that actually has Sonic dying. Mephiles, an evil hedgehog, impales him with an energy spear and kills him, which makes Princess Elise cry. This has the effect of releasing Iblis, who is stored in Elise's soul and who, along with Mephiles, makes up the sun god Solaris. Tails, E-123 Omega, Rouge, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy and Silver all split up to find the Chaos Emeralds in order to bring Sonic back to life. Once they have all the emeralds, Elise kisses Sonic and resurrects him, and the power of the emeralds turns him into Super Sonic.
