Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The action of "Vagrant Story" takes place mainly in the abandoned city of Léa Monde. In what country is this city?

Answer: Valendia

The country of Valendia is also mentioned in both "Final Fantasy Tactics" and "Final Fantasy XII". That is because these games were made by the same production team as "Vagrant Story". This was the only team to ever win a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu magazine twice (once for "Vagrant Story" and again for "Final Fantasy XII").
2. The main character, Ashley Riot, is a Riskbreaker. He is an agent of what organization?

Answer: Valendia Knights of Peace

The Valendia Knights of Peace (shortened to VKP) work for the parliament of Valendia while the Crimson Blades, their frequent adversaries, are a military order of the Church of St. Iocus.

As a side note, "Riskbreaker" is also an attainable monster hunter rank in "Final Fantasy XII".
3. Despite the fact that Riskbreakers always work alone, Callo Merlose is assigned to partner Ashley Riot on his mission. What is her official rank?

Answer: Inquisitor

Merlose is an Inquisitor for the VKP, but she has no field experience at all and therefore Ashley decides to leave her behind. Unfortunately for her, she is then captured by John Hardin and Sydney Losstarot who come across her unexpectedly in the wine cellars.
4. The city of Léa Monde has been abandoned for twenty-five years. Why was it originally abandoned?

Answer: earthquake

A great earthquake twenty-five years ago collapsed large sections of the underground city and killed most of the inhabitants. It also made the city inaccessible by any means except through the extensive wine cellars which is where Ashley first begins his journey.
5. In Léa Monde it is said that the dead walk. What force causes this?

Answer: the dark

The Dark is a natural force that flows in Léa Monde. Souls touched by the Dark do not dissipate and so they wander until they find new flesh to animate. The thousands of deaths caused by the earthquake are what originally caused the Dark to gather in the city in such concentration. Since the earthquake left many bodies, the sealed city was soon full of walking dead.
6. Sydney Losstarot leads the cult of the priestess Müllenkamp. What is the sign borne by him and many of Müllenkamp's followers?

Answer: Rood Inverse

The Rood, being a symbol of the Church of St. Iocus who considered the cultists heretics, was used inverted as a pejorative sign by the church who sought to punish and discourage the cult. It was therefore given the name "Blood Sin" by the cultists. The most prominent person to bear this mark is the leader, Sydney, who wears it openly on his back like a badge of honour.
7. At the outset of the story, the cultists occupy Duke Barborba's residence in the Greylands and take his family hostage. What demands do they make?

Answer: The freeing of their comrades and the abdication of Cardinal Batistum

Officially, the cultists demand the freeing of their comrades imprisoned by the Crimson Blades as well as the abdication of Cardinal Batistum, the head of the oppressive Church of St. Iocus. This is stated by a council member in the introduction. In actuality, this is only a blind for their true goal to locate the Key to the Dark which they believe the Duke has possession of.
8. Many characters develop special powers from contact with the Dark. Who has the ability to see through the eyes of another person?

Answer: Ashley Riot

Midway through the game, Ashley exhibits this ability. The Dark allows him to "synchronise" himself with Samantha and see what she is seeing. When Guildenstern becomes aware of this, he slaps her in the face to break the connection.

Hardin has a similar power, but one that works independently of others. He is able to see distant locations.

Merlose, after exposure to the Dark, gains the ability to hear the thoughts and feelings of others. She learns many secrets from Hardin in this manner.
9. What is Joshua's relation to Sydney Losstarot?

Answer: brother

Joshua Corrinne Bardorba is Sydney's younger brother. They are both the sons of Duke Aldous Byron Bardorba, the retired parliamentarian. Joshua, therefore, despite appearances, was never in any danger from the cultists.
10. Throughout the game, Joshua never speaks.

Answer: False

During the epilogue as Hardin is dying, Joshua begs, "No! Hardin, stay here! Don't go!" These are his first and only words.
11. In the catacombs, Merlose sees a vision of a little boy who says, "I must help father." Who is this boy?

Answer: Sydney

This boy is Merlose' vision of Sydney's heart - a child who wants to help his father, the duke. He looks almost identical to his younger brother, Joshua except for very slight differences in his clothing.

Marco is the false memory of Ashley's slain son and Jan is Rosencrantz' given name.
12. Hardin was once a member of what organization?

Answer: Peaceguard

Hardin was once a member of the Peaceguard. He was expelled from that order and imprisoned for stealing and selling swords on the black-market which he had done to raise money to care for his sickly younger brother. In exchange for his freedom, he testified against the other members of his unit, but by the time he was released it was too late and his brother was already dead. Ultimately, disillusioned with the corrupt parliament, he joined the cult of Müllenkamp.
13. What other character, besides Ashley, was also once a Riskbreaker?

Answer: Jan Rosencrantz

Jan Rosencrantz was once a Riskbreaker, but he was expelled by Grand Steward LeSait for his disloyalty. He now works only for himself and is trying to play all sides against each other to his own benefit.
14. Sydney is not the only one who can summon creatures of the Dark. Who else displays this ability?

Answer: Grissom

In the Snowfly forest, Grissom summons the Dark Crusader to fight Sydney and, when he arrives, Ashley as well. The effort of summoning the creature nearly kills him.

Late in the game, Hardin also implies that he can summon, but it is never confirmed and we never see him do it.
15. What is the true form of the Gran Grimmoire?

Answer: Lea Monde

Léa Monde, the city itself, is the Gran Grimmoire for which Guildenstern searches. The text of the ultimate magic tome is carved in runes on every surface of the city.
16. In what language is the Gran Grimmoire written?

Answer: Kildean

The Gran Grimmoire is written in ancient Kildean runes, the language of the priestess Müllenkamp. Sydney speaks this language when summoning creatures of the Dark.
17. Who is the only Crimson Blade to survive and escape the city?

Answer: Neesa

Commander Neesa is the only Crimson Blade to escape the city. Her partner Tieger was trapped in the city's collapse while fighting an undead Grissom, and Samantha was sacrificed by Guildenstern as the phantom soul needed for the rite of succession.
18. Who demands to be made Sydney's successor?

Answer: Jan Rosencrantz

Rosencrantz tries to compel Sydney to name him his successor to the Dark. However, Sydney refuses and Rosencrantz is killed. Sydney had already chosen Ashley as his successor, though Ashley did not want the position.
19. Who is responsible for Sydney's death?

Answer: Duke Bardorba

Sydney's own father, Duke Bardorba, kills him. He puts a dagger in his son's heart and then dies himself. Since Sydney entered the manor disguised as Ashley, Ashley is accused of murdering the duke.
20. In the epilogue, whose shape does Ashley take to fool the town patrol?

Answer: Merlose

Ashley takes on Merlose's appearance and presents an illusion of her identification so that he will not be stopped or questioned. This is the same trick that Sydney used to take on Ashley's appearance in order to meet with his father, Duke Bardorba.
