Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the tutorial mission at the beginning of the game, which type of alien is the first one you ever fight?

Answer: Sectoid

The tutorial mission takes place in Germany, and is meant to show new players the basic controls and tactics of the game. Every move is scripted, and the outcome is unavoidable. The first alien the player sees is a Sectoid Commander in a cutscene, but the only aliens actually fought in the mission are Sectoids (regular).

Three of the four soldiers sent into the tutorial mission do not survive.
2. Which weapon type can only be used by Assault class soldiers?

Answer: Shotguns

All soldiers can use Assault Rifles, and assault rifle type weapons. When a soldier is promoted to Squaddie (first promotion), they earn their soldier class, and can gain new abilities.

Assault class soldiers are the only soldiers that can use shotgun type weapons. Assault soldiers start off with the Run and Gun ability, which lets them dash and shoot in a single turn. Assault soldiers also get bonuses to armor and weapon damage, making them scary front-line soldiers.
3. How can you increase XCOM's monthly income?

Answer: Launching satellites

Having a satellite over a country has quite a few bonuses. Each country will give the XCOM project more money every month, if they have a satellite over them. Satellites also prevent alien abductions from occurring in the country that they're watching, and can detect UFOs that you can send you interceptors after.

You can also earn money by completing certain missions, and selling stored items on the Grey Market.
4. Which aliens can poison your soldiers?

Answer: Thin Men

Thin Men are particularly nasty aliens. They look like tall, thin, sick men in suits with yellow eyes. They have low health and are easy to kill, but they usually come in groups. They also have a poison attack that will poison any soldiers caught in its radius. They will release a cloud of poisonous gas when killed, making close range kills far more dangerous. Poisoned soldiers will lose one HP every turn until they are cured or it wears off.

Chryssalids can also poison your soldiers.
5. Which soldier class can carry multiple medikits onto the battlefield, and can use medikits to revive downed soldiers?

Answer: Support

When a Support Class soldier reaches the rank of Sergeant, one of the possible new abilities is the Field Medic ability. Field Medic allows the soldier to use the medikits three times during a mission instead of just once. Support soldiers can also revive soldiers with medikits, make midikits heal more HP, and move around the battlefield quickly using the Sprinter ability.
6. Which aliens use melee attacks?

Answer: Chryssalids

Chryssalids are some of the most terrifying aliens to encounter. They are large purple aliens that run around on four spikes, and have sharp claws and teeth. They can move far, and have incredibly strong melee attacks. Their attacks can induce poison, which will damage soldiers over multiple turns. Finally, if a Chryssalid kills a human, whether it is a soldier or a civilian, it will implant it with an embryo, which will turn the human into a zombie the next turn. If the zombie is not killed fast enough, the Chryssalid hatchling implanted in it will emerge.

Sectoids use Plasma Pistols, Floaters use Light Plasma Rifles, and Mutons use either Light Plasma Rifles or Plasma Rifles. Muton Berserkers and zombies use melee attacks.
7. Heavy class soldiers get exclusive access to both machine guns and rocket launchers.

Answer: True

The Heavy is an excellent class to bring on any mission. They are incredibly versatile soldiers, being given both a rocket launcher and a machine gun. Their Bullet Swarm ability can let them fire twice in a turn, or to fire and then move (normally, soldiers can only move, then fire). Alternatively, they could use Holo-Targeting to make enemies easier to hit for fellow soldiers.

Their Heat Ammo makes them excellent at taking out robotic enemies, and their rocket launchers are great for destroying large enemies or walls if a situation ever gets out of hand.
8. Sometimes you will detect aliens in the air over some countries, and can send interceptors to bring them down. What are the two classes of interceptors in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown"?

Answer: Ravens and Firestorms

You start off the game with two Ravens in your starting continent. Each continent can hold up to four interceptors, but aliens will only be detected over countries with satellite coverage. The armaments of your interceptors can also be upgraded, to give them an edge against the different alien ships that can be encountered.

The first interceptor is the Raven, which resembles a futuristic human fighter jet. They do well in the early game, especially if upgraded. Eventually though, you will want to use salvaged alien technology to research the Firestorm, which can take more punishment, and is better for taking on the larger alien craft approaching Earth.

The Ravens use the call sign "Raven", while the Firestorms use the call sign "Demon".

Scouts and Wraiths are both air units from the PC game "Starcraft". Banshees and Hornets are both aircraft from the "Halo" franchise for the "Xbox" consoles. Vipers and Raiders are two kinds of fighters seen in the television series "Battlestar Galactica".
9. Which soldier class can use the Squadsight ability to see what other soldiers see, to target enemies?

Answer: Sniper

Snipers can be one of two varieties in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown", depending on which ability they are given when they reach the rank of Corporal. Initially, Snipers cannot move and shoot on the same turn. With the Snap Shot ability, that restriction is removed, and they can be relatively close-range snipers.

The alternative is the Squadsight ability, which lets the Sniper see and shoot what their allies see, making them excellent long-range fire support.
10. Which aliens can mind control your soldiers?

Answer: Ethereals and Sectoid Commanders

Mind Control is one of the strongest abilities in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown". Sectoid Commanders, Ethereals, and later, your own Psionic Soldiers, have access to Mind Control. Mind Controlled units remain under the influence for four turns. If one of your soldiers is mind controlled, you may have to fight, and even kill them. The alternative is to kill the alien that used Mind Control, which will give you back control of your soldier.

The Sectoid Commanders look like slightly larger Sectoids, but come with more health and an array of psionic abilities.

The most advanced aliens seen in the game are the Ethereals, which also seem to be the leaders of the alien coalition. They look frail and weak, but they actually have incredibly strong shields and psionic attacks. They can reflect attacks from normal weapons, sometimes, making them even more difficult to kill. Explosives (grenades and rockets) are excellent at damaging Ethereals.
