Abigail Adams was born Abigail Smith on November 11, 1744 in Weymouth, Massachusetts (MA). Her parents were Reverend William and Elizabeth Smith.
2. What was Abigail Adams' nickname when she was young?

Answer: Nabby

Abigail Adams' older sister gave her that nickname when Abigail was born. Her sister could not say Abigail right so her sister, Mary, called her Nabby. The name stuck.
3. What was Abigail Adams' mother's famous maiden name?

Answer: Quincy

Abigail Adams grandparents were the Quincys. The area Quincy, MA was named after them. Abigail named her son, the future president, John Quincy Adams, after her grandfather, John Quincy.

Answer: 20

Abigail married John in 1764. With John, she had three sons and two daughters. One of her daughters, Susanna, died at about two years. Her children were, in order: Abigail Adams Smith (who took on the nickname "Nabby" and married a man, Colonel William Stephens Smith), John Quincy Adams (the future sixth president and married Louise Catherine Johnson), Susanna Adams, Charles Adams, and Thomas Adams.

Abigail believed in women's rights. John did not listen to his wife. I desire you would remember the ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation".

John went to Europe earlier than Abigail. In 1784, Abigail joined her husband in Paris, France. She stayed there for eight months and then the family moved to London for three years. In 1788, the family returned to the United States.
