Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the reign of which Pharaoh was the Abu Simbel temple complex constructed?

Answer: Ramesses II

Khufu, or Cheops, is the Pharaoh that commissioned the largest of the Great Pyramids at Giza. Tutankhamun was brought to world fame as the last Pharaoh to have an intact tomb discovered. Ptolemy IV, or Philopator, is a relatively historically insignificant leader. Ramesses II is better known as Ramesses the Great.
2. What of these is NOT one of the original intended purposes for Abu Simbel?

Answer: To surpass the Great Pyramids at Giza

I have used apostrophes around 'victory' as both sides (the Egyptians and the Hittites) claimed victory.
3. How many temples are there in the Abu Simbel temple complex?

Answer: 2

The larger of the two temples is dedicated to the three Egyptian state deities of the time. The smaller is dedicated to the goddess Hathor.
4. The largest of the temples is also the most northerly.

Answer: False

The larger temple is located south of the smaller temple.
5. How many statues are there on the facade of the largest temple?

Answer: 4: two on either side of the main entrance

All four statues are of Ramesses the Great.
6. The Aswan Dam blocks the Nile River and prevents annual flooding. To clear the area for the necessary resevoir, many buildings had to be demolished. Abu Simbel was relocated, thankfully, but in what year did the relocation proccess commence?

Answer: 1964

The temple had to be moved away from Lake Nasser, the resevoir needed for the Aswan Dam project. The whole relocation cost 80 million US dollars.
7. The city of Aswan in southern Egypt is best known for giving its name to the world famous dam. How far from Aswan is the Abu Simbel complex (approximately)?

Answer: 290km

Abu Simbel is south-west of Aswan.
8. Over the years, the complex became consumed by the desert. The temple was only recently rediscovered. When?

Answer: 1813

From Wikipedia:

"Already in the 6th century BC, the sand covered the statues of the main temple up to their knees."

This shows that the temple went into some form of disrepair.
9. Who rediscovered Abu Simbel?

Answer: Johann Ludwig Burckhardt

Giovanni Belzoni IS a significant figure in the rediscovery of Abu Simbel, but he was not the first to do so. Burckhardt discussed his discovery with Belzoni, and Belzoni returned to the temple in 1817.
10. Finally, of what nationality was the man who rediscovered Abu Simbel?

Answer: Swiss

Burckhardt was born in Lausanne and lived from 1784 until 1817.
