Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You happen to find yourself in Enid, Oklahoma, which seems to primarily consist of a small Air Force base. Which base is it?

Answer: Vance AFB

Vance AFB is home to the 71st Flying Training Wing and it is one of just a few UPT (Undergraduate Pilot Training) bases left in the United States. UPT students at Vance first fly the T-37 for about six months and then they are off to either the T-38 if they are bound for fighters/bombers or the T-1 if they will fly cargo planes. (Altus AFB is in Altus, OK; Tinker AFB is in Oklahoma City, OK; Holloman AFB is in Alamogordo, NM.)
2. Where would you find Davis-Monthan AFB?

Answer: Tucson, Arizona

Davis-Monthan, or D-M, is located on the south side of Tucson, Arizona and is home to the 355th Fighter Wing, as well as the headquarters of the 12th Air Force. The primary function of the base is to train pilots in the A-10 and OA-10 aircrafts, as well as provide forward air control to ground forces all over the world. (Phoenix is home to Luke AFB, Albuquerque is home to Kirtland AFB, and Abilene is home to Dyess AFB.)
3. One of the largest bases in the Air Force is in Dayton, Ohio. Which of the following four is it?

Answer: Wright-Patterson AFB

It is very difficult to say just one thing that goes on at Wright-Patt, for over 22,000 people work there. Its missions range from acquisitions and logistics, to research and development, not to mention numerous flying operations. (Scott AFB is in Belleville, IL; Luke AFB is in Phoenix, AZ; Hill AFB is in Ogden, UT.)
4. Which of the following is NOT an Air Force base in (or just outside) San Antonio, Texas?

Answer: Goodfellow AFB

Goodfellow is located in San Angelo, Texas, about 200 miles northwest of San Antonio. It is home to the 17th Training Wing, and every person in the military intelligence field in the Air Force is trained there. All of the Air Force's firefighters are trained at Goodfellow as well.
5. There is a base on the east coast where C-5's are flown. It is called Dover AFB. In what city would you find this base?

Answer: Dover

No, this wasn't a trick question. Dover AFB is actually located in Dover, Delaware. Dover is home of the 512th and 426th Airlift Wings and C-5's are primarily flown out of Dover and across the Atlantic Ocean to a variety of bases in Europe.
6. While we're on the topic of the C-5, there is one other base in the Continental United States whose primary function is to fly them. It is called Travis AFB and it is located where?

Answer: Fairfield, California

Travis is located three miles east of Fairfield, CA, midway between Sacramento and San Francisco. The base's host unit, the 60th Air Mobility Wing, is the largest wing in the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, with a fleet of 37 C-5's and 27 KC-10's. It is also home to the David Grant USAF Medical Center, the largest military medical facility on the west coast. (McClellan AFB is located in Sacramento, Merysville is where you would find Beale AFB, and, similar to Dover AFB, Los Angeles AFB is in Los Angeles.)
7. Okay, here's a fun one: On what Hawaiian island would you find Hickam AFB?

Answer: Oahu

Hickam is adjacent to Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. It is home to Pacific Air Forces Headquarters, making it an extremely important hub for Pacific mobility. The tattered flag that was flown over the base on the morning of December 7, 1941 can still be seen in the headquarters building, as well as bullet-scarred walls.
8. The American South is bursting with Air Force bases. Which base will you find in North Carolina?

Answer: Seymour Johnson AFB

F-15E's fly out of the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. C-130's and A-10's fly out of Pope AFB in Fayetteville, NC. (Tyndall is in Panama City, FL; Eglin is in Ft Walton Beach, FL; Robins is in Warner Robins, GA; Maxwell is in Montgomery, AL; Columbus is in Columbus, MS; Keesler is in Biloxi, MS.)
9. Nellis Air Force Base is often referred to as "the home of the fighter pilot." People who live in its vicinity are often wowed by the world-famous Air Force Thunderbirds Demonstration Team out for a practice run. In what "sinful" U.S. city is Nellis located?

Answer: Las Vegas

Nellis is indeed in Las Vegas, Nevada, home to a lot more things than just fighter pilots. One of the most exciting things at Nellis (besides the Thunderbirds, of course) is the headquarters of USAF Weapons School, the Air Force's version of the Navy's Top Gun. The Thunderbirds have performed for over 288 millions people in all fifty states and in over 56 countries around the world!
10. There are three Air Force bases in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Which is NOT one of them?

Answer: F.E. Warren AFB

F.E. Warren is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is home to the 90th Strategic Missile Wing. Pretty scary stuff goes on up there! I hope you liked my quiz! Try your hand at my Air Force Academy quiz if you want!
