Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Saya ke sekolah naik bis dengan adik laki-laki saya." This means which of the following?

Answer: I catch the bus to school with my little brother.

Saya means I, me, my. Eg, I can "saya dapat"; give me "beri saya"; my bike "sepeda saya".
2. Which of these means "my big, blue car"?

Answer: Mobil biru besar saya.

In Indonesia the subject of the descriptions is put before the adjectives describing it. For this one, the literal translation of the correct answer is "Car blue big my". This means that the answer reading "saya mobil biru besar" actually means "I am a big blue car"!
3. Translate: "Salah satu dari..."

Answer: "One of..."

Eg. "Salah satu dari teman-teman saya." One of my friends.
4. Which of these words means "dogs"?

Answer: anjing-anjing

In Indonesian, to put a noun into its plural form you repeat it. Kucing means cat; kucing-kucing means cats. You do the maths with ular (snake) and kambing (goat).
5. "Kamu mau ke bioskop?" What is another, more formal way of saying this?

Answer: Apakah saudara mau pergi ke bioskop?

The answers all begin with "question-words". Bagaimana means "how"; kapan means "when"; mengapa means "why"; apakah means "tell me if". The sentence means: "Wanna go to the cinema/?" or, the formal translation: "Tell me if you would like to go to the cinema?"
6. Which of the following is not a legitimate prefix-suffix combination in Indonesian?

Answer: pe-kan

The "me-kan" combination creates an active form (or subject focus) transitive verb. The "pe-an" combination creates a noun. The combination "di-kan" creates a passive form (or object focus) transitive verb. You then fill in the blanks with a "root word" (remembering to change the beginning of the root word if necessary depending on its first letter) and construct more complex words. Eg. root word "henti" for stop. Menghentikan: to stop something. Perhentian: stop as in bus-stop (perhentian bis). Dihentikan: was stopped (by).
7. If today is Wednesday, what is tomorrow, in Bahasa Indonesia?

Answer: Hari Kamis

In Bahasa Indonesia, hari = day. Therefore, the days of the week all should be preceded by Hari. In order (without the haris) from Monday, they are: Senin, Selasa, Rabu, Kamis, Jumat, Sabtu and Minggu. Also, Minggu = week. Therefore Sunday, in Bahasa Indonesia translates literally as Week Day!
8. What sort of words are the following: biru, putih, merah, hijau, hitam?

Answer: Colours

In order: blue, white, red, green, black. There is a suburb in Brisbane (Australia) my hometown called Tanah Merah, literally Red Earth (remember the noun "tanah/earth" comes before the adjective "red/merah").
9. Which of the following means "my friend"?

Answer: teman saya

"Saya teman" means "I am a friend." Pengyou is Mandarin for friend.
10. If you get all of these questions right, how many is that in Indonesian?

Answer: sepuluh

Sepuluh = 10. Seratus = 100. Seribu = 1,000. Sejuta = 1,000,000. If you scored sejuta on this quiz you did very well. I hope you enjoyed this quiz and learned something as well. Let me know what you think of it.
