Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a restaurant you ask for a "naam soda". What will you receive?

Answer: soda water

"Soda" is the same in Thai as it is in English, a "no brainer" to start with, but the questions get harder.
2. In the same restaurant, I ask for a "naam som". What will I get?

Answer: orange juice

"Som" is Thai for "orange", as well as being a girl's name. Be careful what you ask for as you might get a surprise ...
3. Still feeling hot and thirsty, I order "naam khaeng". What does the waitress bring me?

Answer: ice

Make sure that the ice is safe to add to your drink as you might get "Delhi belly" and need a supply of Imodium.
4. Still feeling the effects of a long day, I ask for "hawng naam". What does the waitress do?

Answer: shows me the bathroom

Toilets in some parts of Thailand are without toilet paper, but you may be given a little bowl to wash your hands in ...
5. At last my food has arrived but since I like my food spicy ,I ask for "naam prik". What will the waitress bring?

Answer: chilli sauce

Prik are the small red and green chillis. I've tried eating one raw - a big mistake! To describe it as red hot is an understatement - it burnt my mouth and I couldn't taste anything for about three days.
6. My wife does not like hot food, so I ask for "naam yen". The waitress brings what?

Answer: cold water

Make sure that the cold water is from a bottle or this will lead to many trips to the "hawng naam". Never drink the local water in Thailand if you want to enjoy your holiday.
7. What a lovely meal! We feel satisfied but ask for "waay nam". The waitress shakes her head. What did we ask for?

Answer: the swimming pool

It's not sensible to swim immediately after a meal ... Chill out for an hour or two, grab 40 winks in a hammock.
8. The man sitting next to me orders a "naam manao", and when it arrives it looks interesting. What is it?

Answer: lime juice

Time to be adventurous, to try something different although there are no such drinks as durian juice or rambutan juice. Do try durian, don't be put off by the smell, it is delicious.
9. Also on the other side of us a man asks for a coffee and I heard him say "mai sai naam-taan". How did he like his coffee?

Answer: without sugar

Many coffee drinks in Asia are made with condensed milk and sugar, so if you have a sweet tooth this is the drink for you.
10. This drink is a Thai favourite and a very refreshing accompaniment to curry and rice dishes. It is "naam dwy". What would you be drinking?

Answer: Sugar cane juice

It's surprisingly sweet, watch them make it in front of your very eyes, crush the cane and the juice flows into the cup. Cheers!
Remember to drink plenty of fluid as it is easy to get dehydrated.
