Answer: Oxford

As far back as 1200, Cambridge was known to have a school of some description. By 1226 there was an organisation led by a Chancellor which undertook regular studies.
2. Which of the following subjects did these early scholars of Cambridge NOT study?

Answer: Geography

They studied a wide range of subjects in this 'foundation course' and went on to get a bachelor's degree.
3. Which is the oldest college of the university?

Answer: Peterhouse

It was founded in 1284 by the Bishop of Ely, Hugh Balsham. Pembroke was founded in 1347, King's in 1441 and Trinity in 1546.
4. Which famous poet began studies at Christ's College in 1625 under the tutor William Chappell?

Answer: John Milton

He entered Christ's in February 1625 and studied there until 1632. His friend at Cambridge, Edward King, was the subject of one of Milton's more famous works, 'Lycidas'. His brother Christopher Milton also studied at Christ's, starting in 1631.

Probably the world's most recognisable figure in maths and theoretical physics, Hawking joined Cambridge as a fellow of Gonville and Caius College. He died in 2018.
