Answer: Sir John Abbott

5. At the age of 74, which of the following was at the time of his election the oldest person to become Prime Minister of Canada, and then served for only 69 days?

Answer: Sir Charles Tupper

As of 2005, he still holds the record of being the oldest (74 years) to become Prime Minister, and serve the shortest term (69 days).
6. Britain expected this prime minister to send a Canadian militia to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. As a compromise, to try to appease Anglophones (for sending the militia) and Francophones (against sending the militia), he sent a volunteer force.

Answer: Sir Wilfrid Laurier

Anglophones wanted Canada to send the militia. Francophones didn't want to become embroiled in a British war. Laurier paid for transportation, equipment, and uniforms for any Canadians who wanted to join Britain in South Africa.
7. Which Canadian Prime Minister of the 1890s briefly served as premier of Nova Scotia in 1882?

Answer: Sir John Thompson

He was the Attorney General under Premier Simon H Holmes. He assumed the premiership when Holmes resigned, but lost the subsequent election several months later.
8. This Prime Minister of the 1890s was also the premier of Nova Scotia. He was premier in the three years before Nova Scotia joined Confederation. He remained premier for four days after Nova Scotia joined Confederation, then resigned thinking he would be in new Prime Minster Sir John A Macdoanld's cabinet in Ottawa. Who was he?

Answer: Sir Charles Tupper

On 4 July 1867 Tupper handed over power to a revamped provincial administration under Hiram Blanchard. He undoubtedly expected to be included in the new federal cabinet but when Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald ran into difficulty in forming it Tupper persuaded Thomas D'Arcy McGee that they should both step aside in favour of an Irish Catholic from Nova Scotia, Edward Kenny. Tupper may have been motivated by his awareness of the electoral débâcle that was to follow, for in the first federal elections in September he was the only pro-confederate in Nova Scotia to win a seat (Cumberland), and then by a very narrow margin.
9. Which Prime Minister of the 1890s was also Canada's first Francophone prime minister?

Answer: Sir Wilfrid Laurier

As of 2005, Laurier also holds the record for consecutive years as Prime Minister at 15 years (1896-1911).
10. Which Canadian Prime Minister of the 1890s served briefly in Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie's cabinet as Minister of Inland Revenue?

Answer: Sir Wilfrid Laurier
