Answer: September 9th

Although the Charlottetown meeting was officially adjourned, delegates continued to meet and discuss the idea in Saint John, Fredericton and Halifax. The popularity of the notion resulted in a second conference being called for October 10th in Québec City.
4. The second conference included an observing delegation from the Maritime Province that had not been involved in the original conference. Thus, there were now representatives from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Canada East and Canada West. Who chaired the conference?

Answer: Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island

The provinces of Canada East and Canada West were given the names Québec and Ontario respectively. Along with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, they made the first four provinces of the about-to-be-formed Dominion of Canada.
8. Naming the newly formed country was an easy task at the final conference, but there was one difficulty. The British were concerned that calling it the "Kingdom of Canada" would anger the United States, so they chose to name it the "Dominion of Canada" based on a passage in this Psalm:

Answer: Psalm 72

"He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth." (Psalm 72:8)
9. The third conference lasted approximately four months, ending in the spring of 1867. The official document, entitled "The British North America Act" was enacted a little while later on this date:

Answer: July 1st, 1867

The Act received Royal Assent on March 29th, making it the REAL birth of Canada, but the document stated the official date of Union as being July 1st, which is currently known as Canada Day.
10. The first Prime Minister of the new Dominion of Canada was:

Answer: John A. Macdonald

Sir John A. Macdonald was born in Scotland in 1815 and came to Canada as a child with his father. By the age of 21 he was a practising lawyer. In 1844 he joined the Canadian Parliament as Kingston's representative, and in the year 1857 was elected the Prime Minister of the united Canadian Province. With Confederation in 1867 he was knighted, and declared Canada's first Prime Minister.

He resigned due to a scandal in the 1872 election, but regained the position in 1878 until his death in 1891.
11. Which province was the first to join the Confederation after the original four?

Answer: Manitoba

Manitoba joined in 1870.
12. The sixth Province to join Confederation was British Columbia. In what year did they join?

Answer: 1871

Although separated from the bulk of Canada, the intervening land was still officially under Canadian control in the form of "Territories."
13. Between Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, one was the seventh to join and one was the tenth. Which of the two was the last province to join Confederation in 1949?

Answer: Newfoundland

A pro-confederation government in Newfoundland was close to ratifying a resolution to join the Confederation conference in 1869, but that year's elections brought in an anti-Confederation government, scuttling the plan. After many years of non-support for the idea of Confederation, the events of World War II changed the prevailing opinion.

A referendum was held in 1948 which showed support for entering the Union, and one year later, Newfoundland joined with Canada, making the total number of provinces ten.

The name of the province at the time it joined Confederation was simply 'Newfoundland', but in 2001, the name was officially changed to 'Newfoundland and Labrador'. Prince Edward Island joined in 1873.
14. Alberta and Saskatchewan were the eighth and ninth provinces to join Confederation. They joined in the same year. What was it?

Answer: 1905

Alberta and Saskatchewan's entrance into Confederation ended Manitoba's bid to expand its borders further west.
15. Although not considered provinces, Canada has three Territories that are still officially part of the Union. The Northwest Territories were created with Confederation in 1870, and the Yukon Territory joined the Confederation in 1898. What is the name of the most recently formed Territory, created in 1999?

Answer: Nunavut

Nunavut still shares many things with the Northwest Territories, from which it was created. The postal codes still begin with the same letter and the license plate is the same, just as examples. Nunavut does have its own capital city, though - Iqaluit.
