Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During Plebe Summer, new midshipmen most often wear what working uniform based on a uniform for enlisted sailors? (Includes the hat called the dixie cup cover.)

Answer: White Works

During the academic year, White Works are solely worn over physical training gear or for medical reasons.
2. At regular intervals before brigade formations, plebes are charged with reporting to assigned stations in their company areas to recite certain information such as the menu for the next meal, uniform for formation, and officers on duty. They must do this as loudly and as fast as they are able. What is this called?

Answer: chow call

Chow calls are periods of high stress for the plebes. They are most vulnerable to upper-class midshipmen during this time because they are at a known place at a known time and are unable to escape for a fixed amount of time. During a chow call, upper-class may try to distract or intimidate the plebe. If the plebe makes a mistake, upper-class may make the plebe repeat the chow call until it is done satisfactorily.
3. During their plebe year, midshipmen must run down the center of all passageways inside their dorms, Bancroft Hall. To turn, they can only pivot 90 degrees at a time (or stop and do an about face) while simultaneously yelling "Go Navy, sir!" or "Beat Army, sir!" What is this strange behavior called?

Answer: chopping

Even during chopping, plebes must slow to a walk to greet all senior personnel, including upper-class mids, officers, and faculty. Chopping does not happen twenty four hours a day. It ends at study hour and begins again at reveille (probably because it would be annoying to listen to screaming and stomping plebes going to the head in the middle of the night). Plebes must still walk down the center of the passageway and pivot corners.
4. Each table down in King Hall (the mess hall) is usually assigned to a single squad. A plebe traditionally takes a chair next to the squad leader and fills his/her glass when it is empty, amongst other duties. What is this seating arrangement called?

Answer: hot seat

In addition to sitting in the hot seat, all plebes at the table must be able to converse about current events (they must read at least three news articles a day), professional knowledge, Navy sports, and take part in school spirit activities such as drinking a foul concoction called "Beat Army" and "assassinating" upper-class by crawling underneath tables to spray condiments on their freshly shined shoes.
5. What is the bible of plebe knowledge called?

Answer: Reef Points

Reef Points are filled with all sorts of historical information, customs, quotes, and general military knowledge required of a fully rounded naval officer.
6. Plebes often get their first taste of naval ship handling and navigation on board these training vessels.

Answer: YPs

One training milestone for midshipmen is a YP cruise during the summer between their first and second years. This three week training period includes a voyage up the East Coast to ports like Newport, Boston, and New York City.
7. For motivational reasons or for punitive measure (or just for the heck of it) plebes are often ordered to shove their chins into their necks as far as they can. The order goes: "By the numbers, get a __________."

Answer: brace

I have no idea where this came about or what its purpose is. It just makes plebes look like they have four or more chins, thus demonstrating just how nasty and subhuman they are.
8. What is the proper response for a plebe when he/she does not know the correct answer to a question?

Answer: I'll find out, sir.

This response is often followed up with "And report back, sir." This is a risk, however, as upper-class tend to get mad if the plebe doesn't actually get back to them with the right answer.
9. Near the end of plebe year, some upper-class may feel like befriending plebes and allowing them to be on a first-name basis a little early before they are recognized as official midshipmen. This is called:

Answer: spooning

Unfortunately, the term "spooning" has other connotations. Another term with different meanings in the outside world: "flamer" which means someone who is especially fond of or adept at yelling at plebes as a corrective measure. The verb form is "to flame on" a plebe, as if breathing fire.
10. Plebe year is almost over and Commissioning Week is about to start. What greased up monument must plebes climb in order to be recognized officially as midshipmen fourth class and shed the disgusting label of plebes?

Answer: Herndon

The monument is traditionally covered in lard. The plebes must replace the "dixie cup" cover placed on top with a "combination" cover in order to conclude the ceremony. The plebe who actually does this, according to legend, will be the first to make admiral.
