Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If a ship has a hull number beginning with DDG, what type of ship is it?

Answer: Guided Missile Destroyer

2. Which of the following distinctions does the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) hold?

Answer: World's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier

The eighth Enterprise (CVA(N) 65), the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, was launched 24 September 1960 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, sponsored by Mrs. W. B. Franke, wife of the Secretary of the Navy, and commissioned 25 November 1961, Captain V. P. de Poix in command.

The previous Enterprise (CV-6) was involved at Pearl Harbor, but not as a potential target. It was headed back to Hawaii from Wake Island during the attack. Enterprise scout planes arrived over Pearl Harbor during the attack and, though surprised, immediately went into action in defense of the naval base. The carrier, meanwhile, assembled her remaining aircraft in a fruitless search for the Japanese striking force. The first Enterprise, a British supply sloop commandeered by Revolutionaries, was commanded by Benedict Arnold. (Quite valiantly, too. This was years before his treachery.)

USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was inactivated on December 1, 2012. After the inactivation process, she was officially decommissioned on February 3, 2017. She served the US Navy for over 55 years.

As of January 2018, a new Gerald Ford-class aircraft carrier will be given the name "Enterprise". USS Enterprise (CVN-80) will be partially built with recycled steel taken from CVN-65.
3. Which of the following was the boat that John F. Kennedy commanded during WWII?

Answer: PT-109

He was run over by a Japanese destroyer. He and the survivors had to make their way to an island, find food and shelter and signal the Navy for rescue.
4. What was the first US nuclear submarine?

Answer: USS Nautilus

In July of 1951 Congress authorized construction of the world's first nuclear powered submarine. On December 12th of that year, the Navy Department announced that she would be the sixth ship of the fleet to bear the name NAUTILUS. Her keel was laid by President Harry S. Truman at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut on June 14, 1952.

After nearly 18 months of construction, NAUTILUS was launched on January 21, 1954 with First Lady Mamie Eisenhower breaking the traditional bottle of champagne across NAUTILUS' bow as she slid down the ways into the Thames River. Eight months later, on September 30, 1954, NAUTILUS (SSN-571) became the first commissioned nuclear powered ship in the United States Navy.
5. Of the Los Angeles class of submarines (most of which are named after cities), this is the only one with the words 'City of' as part of its name.

Answer: USS City of Corpus Christi

This was to quell religious groups that protested naming a hunter-killer submarine being named 'Body of Christ'. So 'City of' was added so that it could be said that the sub was named after the city specifically, not the body of Christ.
6. How many battleships does the US Navy have in active service (July 2000)?

Answer: 0

Four were in and out of service through the 1980's, but have since been placed in reserved status (mothballed).
7. Which US President depicted on Mt. Rushmore does NOT have a US aircraft carrier named after him?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

CVN-71: Theodore Roosevelt; CVN-72: Abraham Lincoln; CVN-73: George Washington
8. What is the oldest commissioned US Navy ship?

Answer: USS Constitution

Over 200 years old, originally launched October 21, 1797.
9. Submarines: what is the difference between an SSN sub and an SSBN?

Answer: Ballistic missiles

10. What's the actual (not official) top speed of a Los Angeles class submarine (SSN) in knots (submerged)?

Answer: 30-32

Various sources list the official top speed as 20+, 23+, or 28+ knots.
11. Which of the following is NOT a type of US Navy ship?

Answer: Missile Barge

12. Who was the 'father' of nuclear propulsion in the US Navy?

Answer: Admiral Rickover

13. What is the crew size (with embarked airwing) of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier?

Answer: 5680

14. How long did the Nimitz go between its launch and its first refueling?

Answer: 26 years

15. The Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force is run by this organization.

Answer: Military Sealift Command

The Military Sealift Command operates more than 110 ships around the world. These ships carry the designation 'USNS' (United States Naval Ships) and are not commissioned ships. Also, they are crewed by civilians. Some MSC ships also have small military departments assigned to carry out specialized military functions such as communications and supply operations. MSC ships carry the prefix 'T' before their normal hull numbers.
