Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many engines does Boeing's long range "Jumbo Jet" 747-400 have?

Answer: 4

The Boeing 747 is considered to be the first "Jumbo Jet". The B-747-400 was certified in January, 1989. General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, and Rolls-Royce all manufacture engines for the B-747-400. It is the customer's choice as to which engine they want on their aircraft.
2. Which of the following aircraft DOES NOT have winglets?

Answer: MD-90

When the tips of an aircraft's wing look like they are bent upwards, those are called "winglets". Winglets are used to try to improve an aircraft's aerodynamics by turning drag into lift.
3. How many engines does a McDonnell-Douglas MD-11 have?

Answer: 3

The MD-11 is an updated version of the successful DC-10. It includes a longer fuselage, updated engines, and modern avionics and began service in 1991.
4. Which of the following has a T-Tail?

Answer: DC-9-30

A T-Tail is an aircraft that has the horizontal stabilizer mounted at the top of the vertical stabilizer. The Boeing 727 is another popular T-Tail aircraft.
5. The small, short-range aircraft, the Douglas DC-9-30 holds about 100-115 passengers. How many engines does it have?

Answer: 2

The DC-9-30 was the forerunner of the MD-80/MD-90/B-717 series aircraft. The Douglas Aircraft Company merged with McDonnell Aircraft in 1967. Mcdonnell-Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997.
6. Which of the following has more than three landing gear (including the nose landing gear)?

Answer: B-747-400

The B-747-400 has four landing gear. Three main landing gear plus the nose gear. Other aircraft, like the MD-11 and DC-10-30, also have an additional set of gear. By having the extra gear installed, it allows the operator of the aircraft to take-off and land at higher weights, thereby carrying extra passengers and/or cargo.
7. Which aircraft is the first "Double Deck" aircraft (having two full passenger decks)?

Answer: A-380

The Airbus A-380 has two full passenger decks that allows it to carry up to 853 people per flight.
8. One of the most popular aircraft is Boeing's 727. Over 1800 were manufactured and delivered to customers. How many engines does a Boeing 727-200 have?

Answer: 3

D.B. Cooper jumped from the aft "air stairs" of a Boeing 727 in 1971, after hijacking the aircraft and receiving $200,000 in ransom. He was never found.
9. What was the nickname of Lockheed's L-1011?

Answer: Tri-Star

The L-1011 was the last commercial aircraft that Lockheed manufactured.
10. Which commercial aircraft has the largest wingspan?

Answer: A-380

The Hughes H-4 Hercules, the "Spruce Goose", was the largest aircraft ever built-with a wingspan of almost 312ft, but it never flew commercially. The A-380 has a wingspan of just over 260ft. The B-747-400 is just under 232ft, the DC-10 is just under 166ft, and the MD-90 comes in at just under 108ft.
