Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country was home to the first recorded ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, back in the 19th Century?

Answer: Australia

Skiing in Australia began around 1861 at Kiandra, New South Wales, when Norwegian gold miners started to practise and taught their Australian colleagues on the frozen hills around the town. The first and longest surviving ski club in Southern Hemisphere, the "Kiandra Snow Shoe Club", was formed at Kiandra in that year and was still around as per the end of 2014.
2. The biggest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere is very close to the capital city of the country in which it is located. Which is this capital city, and the name of the ski resort?

Answer: Santiago - Valle Nevado

46 kms to the capital of Chile, Santiago, the largest winter resort in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the most modern in Chile, may be discovered.
"Valle Nevado" (Snowy Valley) lies above 3,000 metres and offers 37 kilometers of trails specially prepared to practise all kinds of winter activities.
3. Sadly, in 2010 one ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere had to close, apparently due to global warming. What was the name of the ski resort, and in which country was it situated?

Answer: Chacaltaya - Bolivia

Chacaltaya, 30 kms from the capital of Bolivia (La Paz), was the highest ski resort in the world (at approximately 4,000 metres above sea level on the Andes mountains). It was also the closest ski resort to the equator, the closest to a capital city in the world, and the only ski resort in Bolivia. All of this was gone in 2010, due to the action of global warming which made the Chacaltaya Glaciar completely disappear.
4. Which of the following Australian States does not have any ski resorts?

Answer: South Australia

New South Wales had 13 resorts as per the end of 2014, Tasmania had five and Victoria had 18. In addition, Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory (not a state) had three of them.
South Australia, of course, had none, largely because the weather is simply too warm and also because of the lack of high ground.
5. Tiffindel is the only ski resort in which country?

Answer: South Africa

Inaugurated in 1993, Tiffindel, in the Eastern Cape Highlands, at above 2,700 metres above the sea level, offers winter skiing and other winter sports each year for South Africans and anyone who wants to enjoy it from June to early September.
6. This is considered one of the smallest (if not the smallest of all) ski resorts under the Southern Cross. In which country is it situated?

Answer: Lesotho

The very small AFRISKI RESORT, in the equally small Kingdom of Lesotho, is a relatively new resort which was set up in 2002 in a natural amphitheatre, at an altitude of 3222 metres. It had a 1.1km main slope and all facilities imported from Austria. The resort catered for no more than around 250 skiers.
7. New Zealand is very famous for its fantastic ski resorts. Specifically, are there any in the North Island?

Answer: yes

There are significantly more in the South island (over 25), but five locations in the North Island also have them: Whakapapa, Tukino, Turoa, Taranaki and
Manganui.
8. Pastoruri and Huascaran are ski resorts situated in which Southern Cross country?

Answer: Peru

Though by no means the best place to look for skiing in the Andes, there are some skiing areas in Peru and a couple of tiny resorts and some good ski-mountaineering opportunities. The big difference with the southern countries is that all skiing in Peru is going to be on glaciers, with all that entails.
9. Which is the Southernmost ski resort in the world, and in which country is it situated?

Answer: Cerro Castor - Argentina

From late June to October, you can ski at the southernmost resort in the entire world on Argentina's Tierra del Fuego island, near the city of Ushuaia. There is an on-site skiing and snowboarding school, and a network of low-level trails through the lenga forest for snowshoeing and hiking.

But what really sets Cerro Castor apart from other ski resorts is its end-of-the-world location. If Cerro Castor were be in the Northern Hemisphere it would be situated as close to the Northern Pole as Trondheim in Norway or Edmonton in Canada.
10. Is it possible to snow ski/snowboard in Brazil?

Answer: yes

Brazil's Ski Mountain Park is the only ski resort in the country, 54 kms out of Sao Paulo, situated in the high plateau and mountains which surround the city. Although there are many natural snowfalls during the southern winter (not only in the state of Sao Paulo, but in all southern Brazilian states), there is not enough to sustain a "natural" ski resort.

Therefore, Ski Mountain Park is operated with man-made snow only.
