Trivia From Around the World Trivia Questions

1. The historic meeting between Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in in April 2018 was between leaders of which countries?

From Quiz
FunTrivia World Mix: Vol 21

Answer: North Korea and South Korea

Kim Jong-un was the first North Korean leader to enter South Korea since the Korean War effectively ended in 1953.

Question by player KentQuizzer

2. The sale of goods in the United States is largely governed by what set of model laws?

From Quiz FunTrivia World Mix: Vol 20

Answer: Uniform Commercial Code (UCC)

Ten years of work prepared the Uniform Commercial Code for its initial release in 1952. (The other three choices are made up, as you may have suspected.). The majority of states' adoption of these model laws into theirs own states' laws has helped avoid unnecessary conflicts and problems for sellers and buyers, even across state lines. 'The Code' remains a work in progress. More than 100 other 'uniform laws' promulgations have been enacted on diverse topics, for example: the Uniform Adoption Act, the Uniform Athlete Agents Act and the Uniform Condominium Act.

Question by player ELJ1

3. What is the name of the red felt hat with a black tassel in the shape of a truncated cone that first became popular in the Ottoman empire?

From Quiz FunTrivia World Mix: Vol 19

Answer: Fez

The fez is still part of the traditional clothing of Cyprus today as well as being associated with other countries and with comedian Tommy Cooper who wore one as part of his act. In the Middle East they are often worn by service staff in tourist establishments.

Question by player Mixamatosis

4. Which US president, who spent four days camping in Yosemite with naturalist Thomas Muir in 1903, set aside 800,000 acres in the Grand Canyon for a national monument, later declared a national park?

From Quiz FunTrivia World Mix: Vol 18

Answer: Teddy Roosevelt

Teddy Roosevelt is often remembered for his participation in the Rough Riders, for his Square Deal programme breaking up trusts and regulating railroads, and for his efforts to end the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won a Nobel Prize. What many do not know is that he was an avid naturalist. During his camping trip with John Muir, they discussed what was needed to protect US wilderness areas. In addition to setting aside land for a Grand Canyon National Monument, his administration created many other national parks and monuments, among them Crater Lake, Mesa Verde, the Devil's Tower, Pinnacles, and Chaco Canyon.

Question by player pitegny

5. The 1820 United States presidential election was the last contest where a candidate ran unopposed. Who was the almost unanimous winner, the fifth President of the United States, known for his doctrine?

From Quiz FunTrivia World Mix: Vol 17

Answer: James Monroe

James Monroe was first elected as the Democratic-Republican candidate in 1816, from the party founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In 1820, when Monroe was up for reelection, the rival Federalist Party failed to nominate a Presidential candidate, though the party received 16% of the popular vote. George Washington, who was against party politics in general, was the only other President to be elected without opposition and won every Electoral College vote unanimously in both of his election bids. In 1820, Monroe received all but one Electoral College vote, with the lone ballot going to Monroe's Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. Monroe is notable for the Monroe Doctrine, the foreign policy banning further European colonization in the Americas.

18. A heavily-laden treasure ship was lost in 1511 during a storm in the Strait of Malacca. What was the name of this vessel?

From Quiz Missing! Lost in the Mists of Time

Answer: Flor do Mar

The Portuguese ship Flor do Mar (Flower of the Sea) was built in 1502, and was the biggest carrack built at the time. Unfortunately she was also unwieldy and difficult to handle, and had an unfortunate tendency to spring leaks. While stuck in Mozambique on only her second return voyage, bound for Portugal heavy-laden with spices, she was commandeered by Tristao da Cunha for his India Armada. Although she was cumbersome she served during the conquests of Goa and of Malacca, until it was decided she would transport an immense treasure looted from the Sultan of Malacca back to Portugal. She was caught in a storm and sank in November 1511 in the Malaccan Strait. Many, but not all, lives were lost. The wreck and the treasure have never been recovered, but will doubtless be the subject of international disputes should she ever be located. Portugal, Indonesia and Malaysia have all lodged salvage rights for the unfortunate vessel. A replica of the Flor do Mar has been built and is in the Maritime Museum of Malacca.

From Quiz Do You Know Where I'm Coming From?

Answer: France

Gex is located near France's eastern border with Switzerland. The new French law, passed in February 2016, requires stores to give the unsold food to charities, or to donate it for livestock feed or compost. According to the British paper "The Guardian", the law will have little more than a symbolic effect, because food stores are responsible for only 11% of wasted food. The change is important because the decomposition of food waste is a major contributor to greenhouse gases. This is one of a number of ecological measures being taken. Supermarkets in our area voluntarily stopped providing plastic single-use checkout bags several years ago. As of March 2016, they are officially banned throughout France.
