Jones said this during the famous engagement between the US ship Bonhomme Richard and British ship Serapis on Sept. 23 1779. Things weren't going well for Jones's ship and the captain of Serapis, Richard Pearson, asked if Jones would surrender. And so, Jones responded ...

After being mortally wounded onboard the U.S. frigate Chesapeake during a fight with the HMS Shannon, Captain Lawrence was carried below. He ordered his men, "Tell the men to fire faster! Don't give up the ship!" Later the Chesapeake was forced to surrender.

In a dispatch to Major General William Harrison, Perry reported that "We have met hte enemy and they are ours--two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop." This engagement took place at the Battle of Lake Erie on Sept 10 1813 during the War of 1812.

Answer: Admiral David Glasgow Farragut

During the Civil War, Admiral Farragut lead a squadron of US ships to engage the Confederates in Mobile Bay, Alabama. The "torpedoes" that Farragut refer to are today's sea mines that were in the area protecting the Confederate Fort Morgan.

Off of Argentia, Newfoundland, Mason, an enlisted pilot named Donald Mason onboard a US Navy ship, sent a message reporting having sunk a German U-Boat on January 28, 1942.

Answer: Commander Howard Walter Gilmore

On February 7, 1943, Commander Gilmore of the USS Growler (SS-215) engaged a Japanese gunboat with his submarine. As he watched the battle unfold, he was badly wounded and knocked overboard. He was unable to climb back into his submarine.
