Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1968, when the US Navy plan to purchase and deploy the F-111B was scrapped, the Navy established parameters for their new fleet air defense fighter; two-seat, mach 2.2 with a secondary close air support capability. Which manufacturer won the contract to build the F-14?

Answer: Grumman

Of five companies that submitted bids for the US Navy's new fighter, McDonnell Douglas and Grumman were the finalists. Grumman was awarded the contract in January 1969.
2. The F-14 entered operational service in the US Navy in September 1974. What two squadrons were the first to receive the Tomcat?

Answer: VF-1 Wolfpack and VF-2 Bounty Hunters

The F-14 entered operational service with the US Navy in September 1974 aboard USS Enterprise with the Wolfpack and Bounty Hunters. With the Tomcat, both squadrons participated in the final US withdrawal from Saigon.
3. Any country that develops a new fighter hopes to attract foreign sales to help reduce the individual airframe cost. How many countries ordered and flew the F-14?

Answer: 2

Only the US Navy and Iran have flown the Tomcat. Iran still flies the F-14 but the numbers and operational capability of their jets is questionable.
4. The F-14 could carry all the standard US air-to-air missiles, AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM 120 AMRAAM, and AIM-9 Sidewinder. The Tomcat was also the only fighter that could carry and employ another long range, air-to-air radar missile. What missile was the F-14 uniquely capable of carrying?

Answer: AIM-54 Phoenix

The F-14 was the only fighter aircraft capable of carrying and employing the AIM-54 Phoenix air-to-air missile. The Phoenix had a range of 100NM, travel Mach 5 at altitudes of 80,000-100,000' and cost almost a half million dollars per missile. The F-14 was able to carry up to six Phoenix missiles.
5. One of the unique features of the Tomcat was its variable geometry wing. What was the normal range of the F-14 wing sweep?

Answer: 20°-68°

The Tomcats wing sweep was controlled automatically, with manual override, by an air data computer in a range from 20°-68° based on mach number and lift/drag ratio. To park, the wings could be swept back 75° to overlap the tail and minimize space.
6. In August 1981 two F-14's engaged and shot down two Libyan fighters over the Gulf of Sidre. What type of Soviet built fighter did the Tomcats shoot down?

Answer: Su-22 Fitter

On 19 August 1981, after evading AA-2 Atoll missiles fired by the Libyan fighters, Tomcats of VF-41 Black Aces returned fire and scored the very first air-to-air kills for the F-14.
7. In October 1985 a Mediterranean cruise liner, Achille Lauro, was hijacked by terrorist members of the Palestine Liberation Organization. What unique role did F-14's play in this high tension international incident?

Answer: Intercepted an airliner carrying the terrorists and forced it to land at a NATO base.

After killing two passengers, which was unknown to Egyptian officials, the terrorists were given safe passage from Egypt for the release of the remaining passengers. US forces were able to identify the airliner carrying the terrorist and Tomcats intercepted and convinced the pilot to land at a NATO air base on Crete where the terrorists were taken into custody.
8. Tomcats were involved in a number of skirmishes and regional conflicts. How many F-14's have been lost by the US Navy during combat operations?

Answer: 1

No F-14's were lost to air-to-air threats. However, during Desert Storm, one Tomcat was downed by a possible SA-2 surface-to-air missile. The pilot was rescued the following day but the RIO was captured and held until the end of the conflict.
9. Although the F-14 always had some ground attack capabilities, its initial introduction into US Navy operations was as an air superiority fighter. However, due to cutbacks and early retirements of other attack airframes, the Tomcat was eventually converted to a long-range, multi-role fighter. When and where did the F-14 first drop laser guided bombs in combat.

Answer: September 1995, Bosnia

During Operation Deliberate Force Tomcats from VF-41 dropped the first laser guided bombs from an F-14 in combat on Serbian targets around Sarajevo. F/A-18's lased the target for the Tomcats because the F-14 was not yet able to employ with targeting pods.
10. The F-14 was scheduled to remain in service with the US Navy through 2008. However, the last two squadrons flying "D" model Tomcats, VF-31 Tomcatters and VF-213 Black Lions, completed their final F-14 deployment and began transition to the F/A-18 Super Hornet much earlier. When was the actual, last flight of the F-14?

Answer: October 2006

The last "official" flight took place on 22 September 2006 during a retirement ceremony at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. However, on 4 October 2006, an F-14 was ferried from Oceana to Republic Airport on Long Island, NY making this the last flight of the Tomcat.
