The FN FAL served the British well during the troubles in Northern Ireland and the Falklands conflict, however by the mid 1980s it was far inferior to the other assault rifles of the world, such as the M16 and AK47.

The Czech made ZB vz 26 LMG provided the basis for the Bren gun, British engineers slightly altered the appearance of the weapon before mass producing it.
