Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which company manufactures the M-16?

Answer: Colt

Made as a replacement for the M-14, the Colt Manufacturing and Fabrique Nationale Manufacturing Inc. companies make the M-16. It was originally designed by the ArmaLite company and rifles sold on the civilian market bear the designation AR-15.
2. How long is the M-16 (not any of the newer versions) from butt to tip?

Answer: 99 cm.

It is precisely 98.6 centimeters. There is also the M-16A3 which has a stiffer butt and is 1 centimeter longer than the standard M-16.
3. During which war was the M-16 introduced?

Answer: Vietnam War

The M-16 was introduced during the Vietnam War to replace the M-14. It was introduced formally in 1963 and mass production began in 1965. The butt of the M-16 is paddle shaped, so the soldiers could use it as such while travelling the many rivers of Vietnam, or, at least, that was the premise. Unfortunately, the M-16 is extremely sensitive to water and rusts very easily.
4. What is the maximum rate of fire for the M-16A1?

Answer: 750 rpm

If you had a 750 round magazine, you'd shoot all of it in a minute! The rifle has a high rate of fire, and high muzzle velocity because of the low weight of the bullet - only 55 grains.
5. There is a new and shortened version of the M-16, with a collapsible stock, removable handle on the top and more accurate. Name it.

Answer: M-4

The M-4 and M-4A1 are "a lightweight, gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective rate, shoulder fired weapon with a collapsible stock."

Higher accuracy, lighter weight and smaller size are all important advantages that the M4 has over the M-16.
6. What caliber (bore) bullet does the M-16 fire?

Answer: 5.56 mm.

The 5.56 bullet comes in a variety of types: armor-piercing, tracer, SS-109, rubber-tipped and many more. The bore in inches is 0.223 in, and that is what is taught in the US Army.
7. You can attach a bayonet to the M-16.

Answer: True

Although banned by the Geneva Conventions, there is a place to attach a bayonet to the M-16. The bayonet appendage is also used to affix other things, like laser targeters, and Maglite flashlights.
8. How many rounds can you load into a standard (modern) NATO STANAG M-16 magazine?

Answer: 30

While some armies fill up the magazine with only 29 rounds, a full magazine holds 30. The reason behind the missing round is to keep the strain off of the spring of the magazine so it will be able to be reused. Some armies do not recycle their magazines and have no qualms about topping off their magazines. If you load 31 rounds into the magazine, the strain on the spring will cause loading problems.
9. What was changed to accommodate left-handed shooters of the M-16/AR-15?

Answer: a pyramid shaped appendage to deflect spent cartridges

The pyramid was added after field-testing showed that spent cartridges hit left-handed shooters in the face. It was introduced as early as the Vietnam War and has been on every version of the M-16. Nowadays, every M-16 manufactured comes with the pyramid deflector, as it cannot be accurately measured how many 'southpaws' will be in a single unit.
10. Which grenade launcher was designed in 1969 and standardized in 1979 to be attached to the M-16?

Answer: M-203

The M-203 is a 40mm single-shot grenade launcher, named M-203 because (as the legend has it) there were originally 203 different types of grenades designed for this launcher. Common grenades found nowadays in active army usage are anti-personnel, anti-vehicular, phosphorous, illumination, and many more which are in constant use in many armies of the world.
