Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", where did this kiss occur?

Answer: Underneath the mistletoe

The song was written by Tommie Connor and was originally recorded in 1952 by Jimmy Boyd who was only 13 at the time. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard charts later that same year.
2. In the first ever story to mention a Mrs. Claus, what is her actual first name?

Answer: Amelia

Mrs. Claus first appeared in James Rees's 1849 short story entitled "A Christmas Legend" and was popularized by Katherin Lee Bates's 1889 poem "Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride". According to the Rees story, her first name is Amelia but she prefers the name Jessica.
3. From what were the first artificial Christmas trees made?

Answer: Goose feathers

Artificial Christmas trees were developed in Germany in the 1800s using goose feathers which were dyed green. This was done in response to the deforestization of the region.
4. Viscum is a type of what plant that is often associated with Christmas?

Answer: Mistletoe

In cultures across pre-Christian Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertility and vitality). When Christianity became widespread in Europe after the 3rd century AD, the religious or mystical respect for the mistletoe plant was integrated to an extent into the new religion.

In some way that is not presently understood, this may have led to the widespread custom of kissing under the mistletoe plant during the Christmas season. The earliest documented case of kissing under the mistletoe dates from 16th century England, a custom that was apparently very popular at that time.
5. What is the name of Ebenezer Scrooge's dead business partner?

Answer: Jacob Marley

Ebenezer Scrooge is a character in the Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol. At midnight on Christmas Eve, Scrooge was visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley, who warned him of the coming of three spirits.
6. In which two oceans would you find a Christmas Island?

Answer: Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean

Christmas Island is a territory of Australia located in the Indian ocean. Theres is also a Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean which is part of the nation of Kiribati.
7. Who wrote the poem entitled "The Cultivation of Christmas Trees"?

Answer: TS Eliot

Eliot's poem "The Cultivation of Christmas Trees" was first published on October 26, 1954 as part of a newer series of his Ariel Poems by Faber & Faber.

Answer: White Christmas

"White Christmas" was written by Irving Berlin. According to Guinness World Records, Bing Crosby's recording is the best-selling single of all time.
9. What of these soft drink brands began using Santa Claus in advertising in 1931?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Starting in 1931, magazine ads for Coca-Cola featured St. Nick as a kind, jolly man in a red suit. Because magazines were so widely viewed, and because this image of Santa appeared for more than three decades, the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on these ads.

Interestingly, another soft drink company, White Rock Soda, had already been using Santa Claus in its ads since the 1920s, but these were black-and-white.
10. What fantasy novel contains the following line: "It's always winter and never Christmas".

Answer: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

After Lucy finds herself in Narnia, she encounters a faun who later informs her that the White Witch had banned Christmas after creating an eternal winter.
