Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete this German proverb: "Es regnet..."

Answer: Any of these

You say "it's raining cats and dogs". However, in German, there are even stranger things that may fall from the sky ... such as threads, shoe-makers, and little badger-dogs ...
2. Complete this German proverb: "Früher Vogel..."

Answer: fängt den Wurm

"The early bird catches the worm". A saying that is very popular among reporters. The meaning is easy to guess: Be the first, then you'll get what you want. Basically the same as the next one.
3. Complete this German proverb: "Morgenstund' ..."

Answer: hat Gold im Mund

Literally: "The morning hour has gold in its mouth". Well, if that's so, I'm never going to get rich :) It means that you can feel a lot better and do a lot more if you get up early. Compare with English: 'Early to bed and early to rise /Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise'.
4. Which German proverb means to resign or to lose courage?

Answer: Die Flinte ins Korn werfen

I guess the saying you use is "to throw up the sponge" or "throw in the towel" ("das Handtuch schmeißen"... exists in the German language, too) . We Germans don't throw the sponge - we throw the shotgun into the field :)
5. Complete this German proverb: "Die Augen..."

Answer: sind der Spiegel der Seele

"Your eyes reflect your soul". I like that one.
6. Complete this German proverb: "Reden ist Silber..."

Answer: Schweigen ist Gold

"Talking is silver, silence is golden".
7. Complete this German proverb: "Wie man sich bettet..."

Answer: so liegt man

"You've made you bed, now you have to lie in it" (this is not a literal translation, but at first, I had no idea at all; thanks to Elanor for this suggestion). It means once you've made your decision, you'll have to cope with all consequences. Note also: 'Die Suppe so heiß essen, wie man sie gekocht hat' or 'Die Suppe auslöffeln, die man sich eingebrockt hat' - which means much the same. :)
8. Complete this German proverb: "Er sieht den Wald..."

Answer: vor lauter Bäumen nicht

Even Shakespeare knew it - "he doesn't see the forest for the trees". I don't have to explain this one, do I?
9. Complete this German proverb: "Er ist so bleich..."

Answer: all of these

You can be as pale as the wall, as your shirt, or as a ghost. Sometimes, the ghost might even have a cold ("bleich wie ein erkältetes Gespenst").
10. Complete this German proverb: "Wie ein Tropfen..."

Answer: auf den heißen Stein

"Like a drop (of water) on a hot stone". It means that something you do or did has no effect at all - like one drop of water won't cool a hot stone.
