Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My best friend Johann asks me whether I can read a book upside down. How would I tell him in German that I can't?

Answer: Das kann ich nicht!

"Das kann ich nicht" means I can't do that. "Das kann ich" means I can, while "sicher kann ich das" means I definitely can. "Warum" means why?
2. I'm always telling my children to use their best manners. What word would they use to say please in German? Watch your spelling!

Answer: bitte

"Bitte" is German for please. The other German word, "beissen", means to bite.
3. Tomorrow is my wife's birthday. How would I congratulate her in German?

Answer: Alles Gute Zum Geburtstag

"Schoenen Tag" means nice day, while none of the other alternatives make any sense. "Geburtstag" is German for birthday.
4. I'm in a small German country town and I really need to go to the toilet but I just can't find one. I have to ask a local. What would I say?

Answer: Wo ist die Toilette bitte?

The other choices make no sense or are irrelevant. For example "bad" means bath, "Oma" is grandma and "wo gehen Sie hin" is asking someone where they are going.
5. My wife and I have just finished our meal in a German restaurant. How would I ask for the bill?

Answer: Ich möchte bitte zahlen!

"Ich möchte bitte zahlen" means I would like to pay please. "Wieviele Zahlen" refers to how many numbers, "ich kann nicht bezahlen" means I can't pay. "Zahl mich" makes no sense.
6. We've been driving on the Autobahn and I just realized that I've lost my driver's license. I stop at the nearest police station and inform them that I've lost my license. What would I say?

Answer: Ich habe meinen Führerschein verloren

"Morgen hole ich meinen Führerschein" means I'll get my driver's license tomorrow. "Meine Frau hat meinen Führerschein" means my wife has my driver's license. The other choice makes no real sense.
7. I've become very friendly with a local German tour guide and I think he wouldn't mind if I asked him his age. How would I ask?

Answer: Wie alt sind Sie?

"Wie alt ist ihre Kuh" means how old is your cow. "Wie alt ist das Auto" means how old is the car. "Wie heisst Ihre Tochter" is asking what your daughter's name is.
8. How would I go about asking someone their name in German?

Answer: Wie heissen Sie?

"Wie heisst Ihr Hund" is asking what your dog's name is. "Wie teuer sind Sie" also makes no sense as it's asking how expensive someone is. "Wie alt bist du" is also wrong as it refers to age, not someone's name.
9. I'm about to fly out of Germany and say good-bye to my hosts. Of course I'm not going to be lazy, and want to say this in German instead of in English. What would I say?

Answer: Auf Wiedersehen

Only one option makes sense. Of the other choices, "wieder" simply means again, "sehen" is to see and "morgen sehen wir uns wieder" means we'll see each other again tomorrow.
10. What is the German name for Germany?

Answer: Deutschland

Only "Deutschland" makes any sense. It literally translates as Germanland.
