Brown was born in Glasgow, although the media sometimes say Giffnock, Renfrewshire, which is where his grandparents lived.

He has two brothers, John and Andrew.

Brown's father, and his strong religious beliefs, were powerful influences on the young Gordon.

Answer: An accident while playing rugby

While playing rugby, Brown received an accidental kick to the head resulting in retinal detachment. His sight deteriorated, and eventually he lost his left eye, and has a glass one in its place. Later while playing tennis he noticed the same symptoms in his other eye, but thanks to (then) experimental surgery the sight in his right eye was saved.
5. What degree did Brown achieve at Edinburgh University?

Answer: History - 1st class honours

He graduated in 1972, and stayed on while working on his Ph.D., which he eventually achieved in 1982.

Brown stood as the Labour Candidate in the 1979 General Election, for the Edinburgh South seat, losing to the sitting MP, Michael Ancram.
