Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the legend of Lady Godiva, wife of the Earl of Mercia, in 11th century England. She supposedly rode through her town naked after a bet from her husband that he would lower oppressive taxes for their townsfolk if she did so. What English town did she ride through?

Answer: Coventry

An addition to the legend appeared in the 1700s that before her ride Lady Godiva sent a message to townspeople to avert their eyes as rode past. A tailor named Tom couldn't help himself but have a peek and was "blinded by the wrath of Heaven". Hence, the saying "peeping tom" meaning "A voyeur, a man who furtively observes naked or sexually active people for his own gratification".
2. Whether for tradition, as a protest, or an alcohol fuelled dare, streaking became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1970s. In 1974 a world record was set by Georgia University students including how many streaking students?

Answer: 1543

Running about naked literally streaked through the 1970s and naked people were stripping off at any opportunity. At its peak, impromptu streaking was rife. Whether sky-diving, skiing or conga-lines, it was seen as a harmless bit of fun but is now frowned upon by faculty leaders.

It still happens as an annual event on many campuses but not with the same gusto because of strict rules and repercussions.
3. In 1974 at the 46th Annual Academy Awards David Niven was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor when Robert Opal jogged across the stage naked flashing a peace sign. David Niven quipped "...probably the only laugh that man will get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings" Once Elizabeth Taylor got over the shock, what movie did she announce as Best Picture for 1973?

Answer: The Sting

Opal had a fake backstage pass, posing as a journalist, claiming that he was a solo act. Opal had been seen nude at Los Angeles Council meetings protesting about a ban on nudity at local beaches and was also an advocate of sexual freedom so it would seem he was just expressing himself. Conspiracy theorists claimed that it was a stunt by producers, as David Niven's reactions seemed scripted and Opal was not arrested but interviewed by press afterwards.
4. The first known streaker at a major sporting event was in 1974 at Twickenham Stadium in England. Michael O'Brien, a 25 year old Australian, for a £10 bet ran naked onto the field at half time at an England versus France international Rugby Union game. Michael was arrested and fined for indecent exposure. True or false?

Answer: False

The constable that sacrificed his helmet to cover Michael's groin said "I feared he would be mobbed, or that other people would follow suit. I felt embarrassed so I covered him up as best I could." Because this was the first time streaking had occurred during a major sporting event there was no precedence set and it was considered a harmless nuisance. Michael was only cautioned after being removed from the field.

The infamy that followed Michael was more about the photo of the police helmet covering his groin than his actual streak.
5. Ray Stevens wrote the novelty hit "The Streak" in 1974 poking fun at the streaking craze. "Here he comes - runnin' through the pole beans, through the fruits 'n' vegetables, nekked as a jaybird. 'n' I hollered over ____, I said, DON'T LOOK, ______!" Who was he calling out to?

Answer: Ethel

The Streak reached number 1 in the UK and US charts in 1974. Steven has a long list of music awards for his comedic and satirical songs since 1969 but also has some serious songs including "Everything Is Beautiful" and "Misty", for which he received Grammy awards.
6. 24 year old Erica Roe completed a topless run onto the field at England's Twickenham Stadium in 1982. Erica and her impressive chest bounced across the field at half time during an England vs Australia sporting event. What play was interrupted but delighted the crowd?

Answer: Rugby Union

Erica was known as the Twickenham Streaker after streaking in front of 60,000 people. She subsequently enjoyed a degree of infamy, with many appearances and interviews. No charges were laid and the police were apparently very gentle with her. She is considered the most memorable of streakers and her fame lives on although she and her family have been living in Portugal for many years.
7. English serial streaker Mark Roberts may be the cheekiest streaker the world has ever known. Since 1993 he has streaked at most sports, not completely nude but wearing a gimmick over his privates. A multitude of arrests resulting in fines and bans from sports fields has lead to the Liverpool Police placing an ASBO to prevent any more naked antics from Mr Roberts. What does ASBO stand for?

Answer: Anti-social-behaviour order

An Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) is an extension of the UK's various crime and disorder acts allowing courts to deal with anyone engaging in any behaviour deemed to have 'caused or was likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.' The order works on the principal of imposing a ban on the particular anti-social behaviour by an individual for a set length of time with no punishment providing the person adheres to it.

This covers anything from drunken disorderly behaviour to graffiti and is generally associated with teenage delinquency.
8. One of the most unlikely places you would expect to see a streaker is at a prestigious dog show. In 1999, Mark Roberts streaked again wearing nothing but "Pedigree Bum" written on his back and a toy dog tied to his private parts. What is the name of this annual dog show in Birmingham, England?

Answer: Crufts

Mark managed a couple of circuits around the arena in front of a silent, horrified audience before security ushered him away - all the way to the train station to ensure he left.
9. Scottish comedian Billy Connolly likes to free himself of clothes and is not afraid to do so publicly. Billy pledged to have a wee naked frolic around London's Piccadilly Circus when the first ₤1 million was raised for one of the BBC's Red Nose Day charity events. What is the name of the organization behind these comedy-based charity events?

Answer: Comic Relief

Apparently as Billy was on television dashing around the statue of Eros, the BBC was inundated with calls promising donations if he put his clothes back on!
10. Streaking has become part of our sporting culture with the inclusion of a streaking set with anatomically correct naked figurines and chasing policemen to be used as accessories to the Subbuteo tabletop soccer game. In the special set of rules, when can a streaker be deployed?

Answer: At any time during the match a player can shout 'Streaker' and place his or her streaker behind the goal line.

Subbuteo is the brand name of a table top simulation soccer game where you use your fingers (with much dexterity) and flick your players around a pitch. It has been around since the 1940s and is still hugely popular with a large collectibles markets and annual tournaments.

The creator of the streaker figurine set is Tom Taylor, owner of a table football shop in Knighton, mid Wales. He has made many accessory figurines for table soccer enthusiasts but says that the streakers are his biggest sellers.
