Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gypsies are found all over the world, with a heavy concentration in Europe. From what ethnic background do the "Romani", or "Gypsies" trace their roots?

Answer: India

These nomadic people began their wandering lifestyle in medieval times in India.
The term "gypsy" originated from the Greek word, "Aigyptoi", meaning "Egypt", because the Greeks erroneously believed that it was their country of origin.
In the Sanskrit-based language of the gypsy/romani people, "Rom" means "man" or "husband", while "Romni" is the female counterpart. Romani has nothing to do with Rome or Romania.
2. Many people are aware that over six million Jews were "exterminated" by the Nazis, but do you know how many Gypsies suffered the same fate? (Approximate number, as records were not well kept).

Answer: Between 200 and 500 thousand

The gypsy word for the Holocaust is "Porajmos"; 'The Devouring'. They were systematically registered, sterilized, ghettoized, and deported to concentration camps, where they were destroyed. This subject has been relatively neglected in research and there are some higher estimates, but most authorities who have studied the subject agree that a figure of 200-400,000 is reasonably accurate.
3. When did Gypsies first appear in America?

Answer: 16th century

Gypsies first appeared in America as the first wave of "undesirable elements" from all over Europe were being "dumped" onto American shores.
As of the last (20th) century, there were approximately one million Romani in North America, both in the U.S. and Canada.
4. As gypsies/Romani travel around they engage in many unconventional methods of survival. Which type activity would they most likely *not* be engaged in?

Answer: farming

While gypsies engage in a variety of different employments, they are not known for staying in one place for very long, making farming an unlikely occupation for them. Generally, they tend to move around, both because of their cultural propensity to do so, as well as the fact that many people have always feared and shunned them as asocial.
5. What female rock artist released a song in 1971 called "Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves"?

Answer: Cher

The song was written by Bob Stone and had originally been titled "Gypsies, Tramps And White Trash", but was changed because it was deemed too controversial. I'm sure the gypsies would have agreed, and I just know that they appreciated the revised title.
6. In another song by the same artist, released in 1974, a woman goes to see a gypsy fortune teller, and is told to leave. In the song, the gypsy "laughed and danced and lit the candles, one by one". What was the title of this song?

Answer: Dark Lady

This song was written by the Ventures keyboard player, Johnny Durril.
7. Since the gypsies were considered "Aryan" by European, and specifically Nazi criteria, why were they so brutalized and murdered by the Nazis?

Answer: Racial intermingling had tainted their Aryan heritage

At first, the gypsies were viewed as pure Aryan, but in the convoluted thinking of the Nazis they later "determined scientifically" that they were inferior to the rest of the Aryans. Hence, their removal via deportation to the death camps.
8. You are going to play a game of chance on the wheel of fortune outside my wagon. Before you begin the game, I say the word "Basht". What have I just wished upon you?

Answer: Good luck

To gypsies, both good and bad luck are very important. Both magic talismans and situations can be considered "Basht",
9. My elderly grandmother is traveling with me and the rest of my extended family. There are about thirty of us, and family is extremely important to us. In order for me to demonstrate my respect to my grandmother I may address her by her name, "Ravena", but I will precede it with what word?

Answer: Baba

'Dai' is the word used for 'Mother'; 'Chavi' is a Romani girl and 'Monisha' means 'wife' or 'girlfriend'.
10. Intolerance of the gypsy lifestyle has long roots. By the 1600s, at least three European nations had enacted laws making it a hanging offense for anyone to have had the audacity to even be born a gypsy. What three countries enacted this type of law?

Answer: England, Germany and Finland

Several factors caused the deep-rooted suspicions that led to such laws. Primarily, the serf classes of Europe had finally begun casting off their own chains of bondage, yet were tied to the land as former property themselves. The wandering gypsies had no such restrictions, and could travel freely. Additionally, the light skinned Europeans were suspicious of the darker-skinned "foreigner" who also spoke a different language.
