Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alexander Hamilton was born to James and Rachel Hamilton on January 11, 1755 (or 1757). What was interesting about his family?

Answer: Alexander's parents weren't married

James and Rachel Hamilton could not marry because of an agreement added into her divorce decree. Since her divorce made it impossible to marry again, Rachel took the Hamilton name and moved in with James. Together they had two children, James and Alexander. When Alexander and James were older, their father abandoned them and their mother died of a fever.
2. When Alexander Hamilton went to college, his education was paid for through an inheritance.

Answer: True

The inheritance money for Alexander's education came from his elder cousin Ann Venton. Alexander took a boat from St. Croix to Boston and then from Boston to New York. When he arrived in New York, an attorney helped him get the inheritance money that was gifted to him from Ann.
3. After college, Alexander Hamilton became Aide-de-Camp and Lieutenant Colonel of the Continental Army under what General?

Answer: George Washington

On March 1777, Alexander Hamilton accepted the post of Aide-de-Camp and Lieutenant Colonel to General George Washington. Alexander hoped that this post from General Washington would help him further his career.
4. Alexander Hamilton remained a confirmed bachelor all of his life.

Answer: False

It was shortly after resigning his post as General Washington's Aide-de-Camp, that Alexander ran into his former friend, General Philip Schuyler's daughter, Eliza, again. Alexander and Eliza resumed their courtship and married on December 14, 1780 in the Schuyler home. At Alexander's death, they had eight children (the eldest died in adulthood).
5. Alexander Hamilton signed the Constitution of the United States as the only representative for what state?

Answer: New York

After leaving the war, Alexander settled in Albany, New York with his new wife and child to study law. After the Constitution was written, Alexander Hamilton was the only representative from New York to sign it. In the Constitution, Alexander Hamilton is responsible for adding that a man could become President if he was a citizen or a native born citizen born during the time the Constitution was signed.

This addition to the Constitution would allow West Indies born Alexander Hamilton to become President if he chose to run in the future.
6. To help the U.S. citizens understand the Constitution better, Alexander Hamilton wrote fifty-one of eighty-five essays known as 'The Federalist Papers'. He co-wrote the essays with John Jay and what future president of the United States?

Answer: James Madison

James Madison wrote nine of the essays for 'The Federalist Papers'. John Jay was ill at the time the essays were written so he only wrote five of the essays. Alexander Hamilton wrote the majority of the essays by writing fifty-one.
7. In 1789, President George Washington offered his friend Alexander Hamilton a position in his presidential cabinet by offering him what job?

Answer: Secretary of Treasury

In the five years that Alexander Hamilton served as Secretary of Treasury, he established the Coast Guard, opened the first Bank of the United States, began the United States Custom Service, and built the U.S. Mint. When President Washington turned down a third term, he asked Alexander Hamilton to write a farewell address that was printed for the newspapers.
8. On what monetary denomination did Alexander Hamilton's face appear?

Answer: $10

Alexander Hamilton's face is on the front side of the $10 bill while the Treasury building is on the back side. Alexander Hamilton was the first secretary of treasury. He is one of two people whose face graces the front side of a denomination that is not a president of the United States. He is also one of four people on a coin or monetary bill who wasn't born in the United States.
9. In 1802, Alexander Hamilton had a home outside of Manhattan completed for him and his growing family. What did he name his estate?

Answer: The Grange

Alexander Hamilton named his new home after his grandparent's Scottish home and the home he shared with his aunt and uncle in St. Croix. The Grange was built on nineteen acres outside of Manhattan and nine miles away from the building where Alexander Hamilton worked.
10. Why did Vice President Aaron Burr request a duel with Alexander Hamilton that ultimately led to Hamilton's death?

Answer: Aaron Burr felt disrespected by Alexander Hamilton

Vice President Aaron Burr didn't like what Alexander Hamilton was saying about him in political circles and in the newspaper. Alexander even used the word despicable to describe Aaron Burr. Due to this disrespect, Aaron Burr called out Alexander Hamilton in a duel that led to Burr killing Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton had been witness to six other duels before his death.
