Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Answer this simple math problem: zweiundzwanzig minus sechs ist ...

Answer: sechzehn

A translation would be: "twenty two minus six is sixteen". Note the spelling of "sechzehn". There's no "s" on the end of the first part. (This reflects the pronunciation).
2. What does "Sie" (with an initial capital letter) mean?

Answer: you

"Sie", depending on whether you capitalize it or not, has three meanings in German. If you capitalize it, it is a formal way of saying "you", singular or plural. However, if it is not capitalized, it may mean "she" or "they". In actual use this is not normally confusing.
3. Grüß Gott! If someone uses this greeting, what part of Germany are they most likely from?

Answer: Southern Germany

Southern Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) has some different greetings from the rest of Germany. "Grüß Gott" is a common greeting that literally means "Greet God". People also tend to say "Grüß dich" when greeting good friends. "Grüß dich" literally means "Greet you".
4. Another simple math problem. Wieviel ist drei plus neun?

Answer: zwölf

This time I asked "What is 3 plus 9?" The answer, of course, is 12, or "zwölf".
5. Was bedeutet "abwesend"?

Answer: absent

A translation to the question would be "What does abwesend mean?" "Abwesend" means "absent". The word for "present" (in the sense of the opposite of "absent") is "anwesend".
6. Which of these words is not female in terms of *natural* gender?

Answer: ein Männchen

Ein Männchen means "little man", like in the fairy tale "Rumplestiltskin" (German "Rumpelstielzchen". Note that all nouns ending in "-chen" and "-lein" are grammatically neuter. So it's "das Mädchen" (pl. - ) and "das Männchen" (pl. - ) although "das Mädchen" means "girl".
7. Finish this statement: Wie alt bist du? Ich bin vierzehn _____ ___.

Answer: Jahre alt

A translation of the statement would be "How old are you? I am fourteen _____ ___." Jahre alt means years old. Therefore, completed, it would say "How old are you? I am fourteen years old."
8. Which of these is the correct way of saying in German "I am waiting"?

Answer: ich warte

Most English verbs have three versions of the present tense, for example "I walk, I am walking, I do walk". In German, like many other languages, there is only ONE form. The two alternative German choices are complete nonsense - or "Kauderwelsch" ("gibberish") as the Germans might say.
9. Which of these would not be an acceptable answer to the question "Wo wohnst du?"

Answer: die Rache

"Die Rache" would definitely not be an acceptable answer, as it means "revenge". The question was "Where do you live?" The other answers are acceptable because they mean "over there", "right around the corner", and "in the city."
10. What does the word "schon" mean?

Answer: already

Schon means "already", but it is easily confused with the word for "pretty or beautiful", which is "schön". The German for "now" is "jetzt" or "nun" and for "soon" it is "bald". I hope you enjoyed my quiz! Auf Wiedersehen!
