Joe Jr. loved to fly and volunteered for the mission that ended his life. He was 29 years old at the time of his death.

Joseph Kennedy was very concerned about his daughter's behaviour and arranged for the procedure to be carried out without the knowledge of his wife and family. The operation went horribly wrong and Rosemary lived for the rest of her life in care in Wisconsin until her death on 7 January 2007 at the age of 86.

It was her tragic case that inspired her sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver to start the Special Olympics.
