Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kim has various interests, chief among them being his craze for movies. He has even authored a book on the various facets of cinema. What is this book called?

Answer: On the Art of Cinema

Kim is also rumoured to have over 20,000 videos in his library. He supposedly said that if he didn't become the leader of his country, he might have become a film critic or a producer. He has also written 6 operas (as of 2002).
2. Kim was supposed to have been very angry over a movie released in 2002 because of its North Korean 'connections' - a movie which made a mockery of the North Korean leadership. Which movie was it?

Answer: Die Another Day

'Die Another Day' is a James Bond movie, which incidentally is among Kim's favourites. An organisation based in Pyongyang called 'Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland'
called the movie a 'Dirty and cursed burlesque aimed to slander and insult the Korean nation'.
3. One of the interesting things taught to the North Koreans is reportedly 'the mystical birth' of Kim Jong Il. He has created an image amongst the people that he was born under extremely auspicious times and his birth was marked by various paranormal events. However he was actually born in an area near a Russian town. Which town?

Answer: Khabarovsk

His father was in exile at that time. According to Evan Thomas (in his article 'Women, Wine and Weapons' which appeared in the January 13, 2003 edition of the 'Newsweek'), School children are taught that Kim was born on a sacred mountain and his birth was heralded by double rainbows and strangely singing birds! Oh, did I forget to mention about the new star...
4. Kim is also renowned for his craze for cars. According to Evan Thomas, Kim ordered 200 Class S Mercedes at an exorbitant rate in 1998. What was the total amount Kim dished out to purchase the same? (In U.S Dollars)

Answer: 20 Million

At a rate of 100,000 per vehicle! Supposedly this was 20% of the amount that North Korea was promised by the United Nations that year.
5. To celebrate the visiting of a top diplomat (in 2000), Kim organised grand receptions at a stadium. The events showcased included various facets of North Korean culture as well as some 'controversial' themes. Who was the diplomat?

Answer: Madeline Albright

Ms. Albright was the Secretary of State of the United States at that time. She described Kim as 'an isolated man but not uninformed'. The controversial theme which was shown in that parade was a recreation of the Taepodong missile fired over Japan (in 1998).
6. Kim went to a lot of schools during his childhood days, because of his father. He became a graduate from the Kim Il Sung University in 1964. What was his major?

Answer: Political Science

After Graduation, he joined the Communist party and soon rose in ranks. He was assigned vital posts (partly because his father wanted to groom him for his future presidency).
7. In 1997, one of the top North Korean officials defected to South Korea (through its embassy in China). He was Kim's tutor on various policies including 'Juche' or Self-Reliance. What is his name?

Answer: Hwang Jang Yop

Hwang was also an aide of Kim's father Kim Il Sung. In Hwang's words, 'He's ruthless and will do anything he needs to in order to cling to power.' As of 2002, he is the most senior ranking official to defect!
8. In 1994, the U.S. and North Korea signed an agreement concerning nuclear weapons development. It was signed by Kim and which leader?

Answer: Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton and Kim Jong Il signed the "Agreed Framework". According to this agreement, the U.S. would provide North Korea with two nuclear reactors (for power generation) and oil shipments till the reactors were up and running. In return, North Korea agreed to halt work at a nuclear plant (which was allegedly being used for producing plutonium used for making nuclear weapons). In 2002, this agreement was broken by both concerned parties.
9. Kim was associated with authorizing various terrorist activities, most of which were aimed at South Korea and its citizens. Which of the following is NOT attributed to him?

Answer: Hijacking of an Aeroflot, killing all the South Koreans aboard in 1993

Kim kidnapped the director and his actress-wife so that they could make movies in North Korea. They finally managed to escape 10 years later (4 of which were spent in jail). There was NO hijacking of an Aeroflot (just a figment of my imagination!)
10. In which year did Kim come to power in North Korea?

Answer: 1994

On July 8th, Kim's father Kim Il Sung passed away. In the words of Kim Jong Il (to Konstantin Pulikovsky, a Russian official), 'I am the object of criticism around the world, but I think that since I am being discussed, then I am on the right track.' Details about Kim are mostly obtained from accounts of defectors and other escapees.

There is NO official version partly due to the secrecy involving Kim's life (and the officially released version by the North Korean Government portrays him as a GOD).

However it is generally agreed that Kim indulges in a lifestyle that incorporates the finest cognacs, women, cars and all-night parties. All this while his country is starving...
