Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The quiz title comes from a 1972 song, the performer of which stated that he was going to run for public office in the US in 2016. He said "These 'troubled times' call for a 'troubled mind' indeed. These 'troubled times' call for ---". Who is this troubled mind?

Answer: Alice Cooper

Cooper never actually got around to running, but his Wild Party manifesto certainly made for interesting reading, including items such as "Adding Lemmy to Mt Rushmore", "Groucho Marx on the $50 bill", "Ban on taking selfies, except on a designated National Selfie Day" and the obligatory "No more pencils, no more books". Cooper actually first toyed with the idea of public office in 1988, when Governor of Arizona, Evan Mecham, was impeached.

His campaign slogan on this occasion was to be "A Messed-Up Governor for a Messed-Up State", but secretary of state Rose Mofford took over from Mecham, thereby denying Cooper the opportunity.
2. After retiring from film-making in 1950, who ran for office in 1967 hoping to replace J. Arthur Younger as representative for San Mateo County, California?

Answer: Shirley Temple

Temple was unsuccessful in her bid, but did go on to have a very successful diplomatic career, appointed as U.S. delegate to the United Nations by President Nixon in 1969, as ambassador to Ghana from 1974 to 1976 by President Ford, and ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992 by President George H.W. Bush.

She was also a foreign affairs officer-expert from 1981 to 1989 under President Reagan and the first female Chief of Protocol of the United States between 1976 and 1977.
3. Menzies Campbell was Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the UK between 2006 and 2007 as well as being an MP for 28 years. In which event did he represent Great Britain at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics?

Answer: 200 Metres

Campbell won his Olympic first round heat with a time of 21.3 seconds before finishing a disappointing sixth and being eliminated in the second round heats. He was also a part of the 4 × 100 metres relay team at the same Olympics who made it through all of their heats, only to finish in last place in the final. Campbell was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for North East Fife in Scotland in 1987 and served the community until 2015 when he retired and took a seat in the House of Lords as The Lord Campbell of Pittenweem.
4. In 2009, Peter Garrett, the Member of the Australian Parliament for Kingsford Smith, reformed his band to perform concerts to aid the victims of the Victorian bushfire. Of which band is he the lead vocalist?

Answer: Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil had many hits in Australia before their breakthrough global hit, "Beds Are Burning" in 1987. Their music often had a political message and dealt with issues such as environmental causes and the rights of indigenous peoples, so it was no great surprise when, in 2002, Garrett quit the band to turn to politics.

He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2004 and served until 2013 when he decided to not seek re-election and during his tenure, served as Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and as Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth under Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
5. Which actress, a two-time Oscar winner, recipient of two Emmys and a Tony award winner, quit acting for politics in 1992 as she was "prepared to do anything that is legal to stop Thatcher destroying Britain"?

Answer: Glenda Jackson

Jackson already had Oscars for "Women In Love" (1971) and "A Touch Of Class" (1974) as well as her Emmy awards for "Elizabeth R" (1972) by the time she stood for election. She was MP for Hampstead and Highgate (later Hampstead and Kilburn) between 1992 and 2015, also serving as Junior Transport minister for two years under Tony Blair.

She remained fiercely critical of the Conservative party, giving a speech after the death of Margaret Thatcher in 2013 in which she stated that Thatcher "treated vices as virtues and made UK susceptible to unprecedented unemployment rates and homelessness." Following her decision to not seek re election in 2015, she returned to acting and in 2018, won a Tony award for "Three Tall Women" in which she played the part of character A, a woman in her 90s.
6. The Senate of the Philippines is comprised of 24 senators. Only one however has won seven major world boxing titles in five different weight classes. Who is the politician you wouldn't want to fight with?

Answer: Manny Pacquiao

Pacquiao has been WBC champion in the flyweight, super featherweight lightweight and super welterweight classes, IBF champion in super bantamweight and WBO and WBA welterweight champion. He won the WBA welterweight title in July 2018, beating Lucas Matthysse in the seventh round, showing that since becoming a senator in 2016, his passion for the sport has not dimmed. Prior to becoming a senator, he was an elected Member of the Philippine House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016.
7. In the 2001 UK General Election, glamour model Katie Price, "famed" for her 32FF breasts, stood as an independent candidate in the Manchester constituency of Stretford and Urmston, under the slogan "For a bigga and betta future" (sic). Under which name did she conduct most of her modelling career?

Answer: Jordan

Perhaps not surprisingly, Price won so few votes that she lost her deposit and the urge to continue with a political career. Highlights of her manifesto were a pledge to give free plastic surgery to anyone that wanted it, tax cuts for people that had affairs with foreign footballers, and holidays paid for by the National Health Service.

At a campaign interview, she admitted "I know it will take a big swing to win the seat but there's no bigger swinger than me". Since retiring from modelling, she has turned her hand to writing, publishing six autobiographies and at least ten novels, ghost-written by Rebecca Farnworth.
8. Musician Youssou N'Dour was disqualified from standing in his country's 2012 presidential elections but was appointed as Minister of Culture and Tourism by new Prime Minister Abdoul Mbaye, with responsibility for promoting the country abroad. Which country?

Answer: Senegal

N'Dour is well known for his work with Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen as well as his trilingual (English, French and Wolof) global smash "7 Seconds" with Neneh Cherry. He was barred from running in the presidential elections due to questions surrounding the legitimacy of some of his endorsements.

In 2013, he was appointed Special Advisor to President Macky Sall, with the emphasis still being on promoting Senegal abroad.
9. Bez, real name Mark Berry, stood in the 2015 UK General Election as a candidate for Salford and Eccles. For which Manchester band is he chief dancer and main maraca shaker?

Answer: Happy Mondays

On the campaign trail, Bez promised his Reality Party would deliver "free energy, free food and free anything", and spent much of his campaigning time handing out free beer to would be voters. Although on a serious side he stood on an environmental and anti-fracking platform, it wasn't enough and he gained just 703 votes or 1.6% of voter turnout. Happy Mondays are best remembered for their early 90s hits "Step On" and "Kinky Afro" (both 1990) as well as "Freaky Dancin'" (1986) which is believed to be about Bez.
10. In August 2018, the newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan took office, 26 years after playing in his last cricket test match for his country. Who is he?

Answer: Imran Khan

Khan played international cricket for over 20 years, captaining his country for 48 test matches. Whilst a serving MP in 2007, his protests against the legality of the elections led to him being placed under house arrest by President Pervez Musharraf. This in turn increased support for Khan and his PTI Party to such an extent that they finished second to Pakistan Muslim League in the 2013 elections and in 2018, amid allegations of large-scale vote rigging, won 116 of the 270 contested seats, paving the way for his nomination as Prime Minister.
