Founded in 1636, the Army National Guard is 139 years older than the U.S. Army. The first National Guard units were organized in the Massachusetts colony.

The National Guard is prohibited from leaving U.S. soil to perform its missions. Only when called into Federal Active Service may National Guard member leave the U.S. to perform combat mission.
