Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who pays for the delivery of local weekly newspapers that are put in your door?

Answer: the adverts in and with them pay for their production and delivery

Amazingly there are a number of full time local newspapers that can make a living by producing a newspaper and selling advertising space in them and delivering advertising with them. You can possibly avoid them by a note on your door saying "No Free Papers Please", but don't count on it being too effective.
2. When are the local free papers meant to be delivered in London (England)?

Answer: up to about 7pm Thursday or Friday

The newspapers are reliant on advertising for things such as cinemas and other events which need early notice of by residents. Much of the advertising is useless by Saturday, but the papers still seem to arrive late don't they?
3. Are deliverers paid to leave the free newspaper hanging out your letterbox?

Answer: No

Deliverers are told to push the paper right through the letterbox. By doing this burglars are then not aware that you are out or on holiday. However, practice does vary.
4. When you see your deliverer struggling up the road with an incredible weight of papers and even heavier piles of advertising, have they always been trained in manual handling?

Answer: No

Strangely the newspapers in my area do ask if the deliverer has had such training, but I have never heard of anyone being given the training by the newspaper.
5. When the snow is deep on the ground, or there is excessive rain, wind or cold, do the deliverers receive more money?

Answer: No

Deliverers are expected to finish on time in all winds and all weathers.
6. Do the newspapers check that the free newspapers are actually delivered and not just dumped in bundles over fences etc?

Answer: yes

The newspapers do have verifiers who call on a certain number of houses in the streets being delivered (at regular intervals in the year) and verify deliveries. This activity is sometimes done by telephone.
7. Why do you get a free copy delivered when they often cost money in the newsagents?

Answer: to ensure a wide enough circulation to obtain the money paid for advertising in the newspaper

One place where deliverers have no trouble in delivering a newspaper free is at a newsagent. In fact the newsagents may well want about ten copies of the newspaper for all the flats over their shop and all their relatives as well. Some deliverers shy off the exceptional hospitality of such premises.
8. Are deliverers required to deliver whatever is given to them in terms of advertising, and to do other rounds of adverts during the week, if the newspaper so requires?

Answer: yes

Local newspapers seem to assume that whatever they want delivered must be done by the deliverer.
9. As they're delivered separately but with the newspaper, are the advertising brochures therefore guaranteed to be good bargains (by being with the newspaper)?

Answer: no

Newspaper will deliver anything that they are asked to deliver in most cases and do not seem to check this material's background too heavily.
10. Is there a professional name for the cards, rubbish adverts and pamphlets delivered on top or inside your weekly local newspaper?

Answer: Advertising

No name really and it is just called "advertising".
