1. Let's go back to the beginning - how the BBC started, back in 1922. Who was its first Director General?

Answer: Lord John Reith

John Charles Walsham, 1st Baron Reith of Stonehaven. What a name! Originally an engineer, he knew nothing about broadcasting when he got the job, but believed that broadcasting should aim to 'entertain and inform'. He left in 1937, and was briefly an MP.
2. Who became the Director General in 2000?

Answer: Greg Dyke

When he took up his post in 2000, Greg Dyke reorganised the Beeb, and made plans to expand into Digital Television and Radio. John Birt was his predecessor, John Humphrys is the hard hitting Radio Presenter, and Adam Westbrook will run the BBC one day.
