Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We set off from my village, Cwmfelinfach, which in English means?

Answer: Valley of the little mill

Not to give too much information away, "cwm" means "valley", "fach" means "small, little". The mill has long since disappeared. Only common Welsh words will be given meanings in this quiz.
2. The next village we come to, is called Ynysddu, which in English means?

Answer: Black island

Since I come from a mining community, villages sprang up due to the discovery of coal. "Ynys" means "island", "ddu" means "black".
3. Next, we drive past the place my brothers went to school, Pontllanfraith. What does this mean in English?

Answer: Bridge near the mottled church

Originally home to a grammar school, it changed to secondary modern school in the 1970s. "Pont" means "bridge", "llan" means "church".
4. Turning right, we travel to Mynyddislwyn. What does this mean in English?

Answer: Islwyn 's mountain

This mountain is named after Islwyn, a great Welsh poet.
5. Along the road, we come to a village where I played senior football, Pentwynmawr. What is the English meaning of this name?

Answer: Top of the large dune

"Top of the large dune" or "Pentwynmawr" was the place where I played football and scored many times. Sometimes we played on pitches that were on top of mountains and we had a small boy to run down the mountain after the ball. "Pent" means "top", "mawr" means "big".
6. A nice easy one now. We carry on to Pont Newydd. What is the meaning of this name in English?

Answer: Newbridge

"Pont" means "bridge" (cf. French). "Newydd" needs no translation.
7. We then turn north and pass Abertillery, which in English means?

Answer: Mouth of the river Tyleri

"Aber" means "mouth - of river". The meaning of "Tyleri" has been lost in the mists of history.
8. Nearly there, but next we go through Brynmawr, which in English means?

Answer: Big hill

"Mawr", you should remember means "big", "bryn" means "hill". One of the oldest and most prestigious American universities for women is also called Bryn Mawr.
9. In the distance we can see a mountain which rises above Abergavenny. It is called the Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Answer: True

Sugar Loaf Mountain towers over the town of Abergavenny. There are great views from the top.
10. Finally, we have arrived in Abergavenny. What does the name of this place mean in English?

Answer: Mouth of the River Gavenny

"Aber", I hope you remember, means "mouth - of river", and the name of this river in Welsh is "Y Fenni". In this case, the mouth is at the point where it joins the River Usk.

Well, I hope you enjoyed your trip to Abergavenny and are now able to know in part the meaning of some words in my language.
