Bulgarians also call the first day of the New Year with the names "Souroka", "Vassilitza" or "Sourozdru". On the eve of the holiday the family gathers round the table, which is piled with various dishes, everything that the family wishes to have during the year.
2. How would you say March in Bulgarian?

On the 1st of March there is a holiday celebrated only in Bulgaria. It's called Baba Marta and on that day everybody gets the so-called "martenitza"- twisted red and white thread, as a symbol of health and vitality.

December is the twelfth month in the Roman calendar and according to the Bulgarian calendar the twelfth month bears the beautiful name of 'prosinetz'. This Old Bulgarian word is derived from the Indo-European 'bherat': shining, glowing. Legends tell that during this month the day begins to "glow", to become brighter and to grow.

In some regions of Bulgaria this month is called Nikulden's month.

In the ancient Roman solar calendar, the last month of summer is the sixth month of the year and was called sextilis. In the 1st c. BC it became the eighth month and by decision of the Senate was renamed in honor of Emperor Guy Octavian (63 BC - 14 AD), who received the title of August ('dignified by the gods'). This name is preserved until now. The Bulgarians call it "glowing" month.
