Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If officers from the NYPD are New York's Finest, who are the Bravest?

Answer: Firefighters

Prior to the creation of the Fire Department of New York City, various volunteer forces battled blazes...and sometimes, each other. Rivalry was so intense between some forces that they would engage in fistfights while the building burned to the ground.
2. New York City employs park rangers.

Answer: true

Since 1979, the Department of Parks and Recreation has employed Urban Park Rangers to give tours and provide law enforcement within the parks. Yes, we do wear Smokey Bear hats.
3. What department do New York's Strongest work for?

Answer: Sanitation

It's a tough and dirty job, but hundreds of people sign up to take the qualifying exam every year. It's a written test ... I wonder what kind of questions are asked.
4. There are lots of ambulances in NYC. The ones that belong to the city are red and have the four initials of their department stenciled on them. What letters are they?

Answer: FDNY

The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics that staff ambulances are a part of the FDNY, but they don't fight fires. They will, however, save hundreds of lives every year. They also don't like to be called ambulance drivers, even while they're driving the ambulance.
5. There are jailkeepers or wardens employed by New York City.

Answer: true

They are Corrections Officers, a.k.a. New York's Boldest. They are responsible for the inmates locked up in the city jail located on Rikers Island.
6. The use of chauffer-driven cars by city officials didn't get Mike Bloomberg's approval when he was Mayor. Who took him to work?

Answer: A subway operator

Mayor Mike, billionaire though he was, preferred to ride the #6 train from his Upper East Side mansion to City Hall. The trains (as well as city buses) are overseen by the Metropolitan Transit Authority. The MTA also collects tolls on bridges and has its own police force.
7. Only an NYPD officer can arrest you or write you a ticket in NYC.

Answer: false

There are actually many different law enforcement agencies. A short (and incomplete) list: NYC Sheriffs, Taxi and Limousine Inspectors, Traffic Agents, School Safety Officers, Parks Enforcement and Health and Hospital Police.
8. I didn't pay my parking ticket and now my car's been towed. To make matters worse, I also didn't pay the rent and was evicted. Who does these things?

Answer: NYC Sheriffs

Yep, there are sheriffs in town; however, they do not have star shaped badges.
9. Besides the operator, a conductor rides each subway car. What is he or she responsible for?

Answer: Opening and closing the doors

They also announce each stop and make sure the doors don't close on anyone. There are no tickets; plastic cards are swiped at turnstiles like credit cards. They can be bought at token booths (which no longer sell tokens but haven't been renamed yet) or in stores.
10. The horses that pull carriages through Central Park have someone looking out for their well being. Who makes sure they're not abused?

Answer: ASPCA Police Officers

You might think Sheriffs and horses go together, but not in NYC. And the horses don't fit in the ambulances, so EMS sticks to human patients. As for the Horse & Cow Commission, well, that's just silly. The horses aren't allowed to work when it's very hot or really cold.
