Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Oregon State University's mascot's name?

Answer: Benny the Beaver

Benny the Beaver was not the first idea. They actually were thinking of having a coyote named Jimmie! I think Benny the Beaver is much cooler, especially considering that Oregon's nickname is the Beaver State.
2. When was OSU established?

Answer: 1858

It was primarily an agriculture school then. OSU was just a private academy until college-level courses were added in 1865 and the first degree was awarded in 1870.
3. Where is OSU located?

Answer: Corvallis

It is a small, quiet town where most of the population are college students. There aren't many attractions there. Mostly fields and farmhouses are on the outskirts, and the downtown itself isn't much more than a few stores and restaurants.
4. OSU has three grants awarded by the government to create fields of study in each category. Which category is not covered by the grant?

Answer: sky observation

OSU is one of six states in the nation to have all three grants - land, sea, and space. This means OSU is able to teach courses in all those three fields.
5. Who is OSU's biggest rival?

Answer: University of Oregon

OSU and University of Oregon have always been rivals, and the long- standing football civil war is played every year on alternating home fields. In 2002, the Beavs won the title of champs; we will see what the next season brings.
6. OSU was originally an all-boy school?

Answer: Yes

Yeah, girls were admitted only later. In fact, OSU was the third public university in the history of the U.S. allowing women into the program (the Dakotas being the first two), but only with a science major until 1890.
7. Oregon State University is home to which of the following?

Answer: Nuclear power facility on campus

This means we are forced to have armed guards all the time on campus, protecting the site. OSU was given a grant to be able to develop nuclear technology, and many students come from all over the world for this program. There are a number of similar research reactors at other US colleges.
8. What was invented at OSU?

Answer: maraschino cherries

Yeah, that's our claim to fame. It actually wasn't meant to happen. Students in a lab class were trying to make medicine but one of them accidently swallowed some of it, and it turned out to be quite good!
9. What is the name of the music hall at OSU?

Answer: Benton Hall

Just had to throw that one in there, considering that is practically my second house. Benton Hall is one of the oldest halls on campus, as can be seen just by looking at it.
10. Which hall was named after the winner of two Nobel Prizes?

Answer: Pauling Hall, Pauling, pauling hall, pauling

Linus Pauling graduated from OSU in 1922, and was the only person ever to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes: in Chemistry (1954) and Peace (1962).
