Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said that Robert Livingston was "this being, so brilliant, and yet so corrupt, which, like a rotten mackerel by moonlight, shined and stunk".

Answer: John Randolph

Some say that Randolph called Henry Clay a rotten mackerel, and not Robert Livingston. Of course, Randolph could have used the insult twice - feeling it was too good to waste.
2. "Rush Limbaugh is a big, fat idiot".

Answer: Al Franken

Al Franken is a left-wing US political commentator, and his book is (predictably) a less than subtle attack on right-wing political figures. To be fair, Rush Limbaugh is less than subtle in some of his comments too, and is in any case big enough to take it.
3. "I believe we are on an irreversible course toward more freedom and democracy, but that could change."

Answer: Dan Quayle

I get your point, Dan. There are no irreversible courses.
4. "I have just received the following telegram from my generous daddy. It says 'Dear Jack. Don't buy a single vote more than necessary. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a landslide.'"

Answer: John Kennedy

There's many a true word spoken in jest, but being one of Joe Kennedy's sons was a mixed blessing at best. Martin Luther King, Sr. once told John that he almost didn't vote for John for president because he didn't want to vote for a Catholic. Later John said something like, "Imagine, Martin Luther King's father is a bigot. Well, we all have fathers, don't we?" Yes, indeed, Jack.
5. "All politics is local."

Answer: Tip O'Neil

They all knew that, but Tip gets the credit for saying the words.
6. Who apparently enjoyed referring to J. Edgar Hoover as "J. Edna Hoover"?

Answer: Robert Kennedy

Perhaps it was funnier at the time.
7. "The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."

Answer: Pat Robertson

The quote apparently comes from one of Pat's fundraising letters during his 1992 try for the presidency. Pat later denied having anything to do with the letter, and blamed some rogue staff member for going overboard.
8. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."

Answer: Bill Clinton

Lot of denial going on here. Clinton's definition of "sexual relations" differed considerably from those of most people, as he was eventually forced to admit.
9. "Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."

Answer: Tom Lehrer

It was popular at the time to dislike and mock Henry Kissinger, but his many achievements are coming to be recognised, and he has received many other international awards.
10. Who said that John Kennedy was "all profile and no courage"?

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor thought Jack was a light-weight "pretty boy" with no principles, no scruples, and no morals. As well she might.
