Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2009, Barack Obama was the ______ different U.S. president to have been in office?

Answer: 43rd

The key word here is DIFFERENT. Obama was the 43rd different one. Cleveland was elected to two non-consecutive terms, he is still the same person and therefore there have only been 43 different Presidents in office.
2. Which two US presidents can be linked due to odd coincidences, such as their election years and the names of their successors?

Answer: John Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln

A few weird coincidences:
Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860 and John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Both names (Lincoln and Kennedy) have seven letters. Both of their wives lost their children while in the White House. Both were shot in the head on a Friday. Both were succeeded by southerners named Johnson. Both of their assassins were assassinated before their trials. I just thought it was a little odd.
3. Bush Jr was the ______ U.S. president with a last name that contained only four letters.

Answer: 5th

Bush, Bush (Jr), Ford, Taft, and Polk.
4. Who was the first left-handed US president?

Answer: James Garfield

Garfield was the 20th president. He didn't serve more than a year before he was assassinated by a mentally imbalanced lawyer, Charles Guiteau.
5. Who was the first US president to be elected who was born in the 20th century?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

JFK was born May 29, 1917. He was elected in 1961 as the 35th president. However, his term was cut short when he was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. LBJ was actually born on 27 August 1908, but he did not become president until after Kennedy's death, so Kennedy was still the first.
6. Who was the youngest US president of the following choices?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt was William McKinley's vice-president, and unexpectedly became the 26th president at the age of 42 years when McKinley was assassinated in September 1901. His motto was "Speak softly and carry a big stick." In 1960, John F Kennedy became the youngest president to be elected to the position, aged 43.
7. Which of the following US presidents was oldest when he left office?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan, the 40th president, was 77 years old when he left office in 1989 at the end of his second term. He almost didn't make it - on March 30, 1981, an attempt was made to assassinate him when he was shot by John Hinckley Jr. However, he survived the attack.
8. Who was the first US president born west of the Mississippi River?

Answer: Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover was the 31st president. He was born in West Branch, Iowa. The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum was opened on August 10,1962, which was also Hoover's 88th birthday.
9. Who was the first US president to serve two non-consecutive terms?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Grover Cleveland served 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. He served as both the 22nd and the 24th president.
10. Richard Nixon was the ______ U.S. president to leave his office prematurely.

Answer: 9th

William Harrison (9th president) died of pneumonia, Zachary Taylor (12th president) died of gastroenteritis, Abraham Lincoln (16th president) was assassinated, James Garfield (20th president) was assassinated, William McKinley (25th president) was assassinated, Warren Harding (29th president) died of a heart attack, Franklin Roosevelt (32nd president) had a stroke. John F. Kennedy (35th president) was assassinated, and Richard Nixon (37th president) resigned.
