Answer: Tennessee

Explorer Colonel John Donelson led a group to the current city of Nashville, Tennessee. John Donelson decided where to go with Captain James Robertson who also took a group to Nashville. When the two groups got there, they originally called the settlement French Lick.

The groups reached French Lick in April of 1780. In the fall of 1780, the Donelsons moved to Kentucky, but in 1786 most of the family, but not Rachel, moved back to Tennessee. The same year they moved back, John Donelson was murdered.

Rachel was one of the youngest children of John Donelson and Rachel Stockley. Rachel had more brothers than sisters.

Answer: Lewis Robards

In 1789, while in Kentucky, 17 year old Rachel married Lewis Robards. She did not go back to Tennessee when the rest of her family did at first.

Andrew Jackson and Rachel got married in Natchez, Mississippi. Andrew had met Rachel in Tennessee when Rachel came back to Nashville in 1788. Andrew, who had recently become a certified lawyer, traveled to Nashville and stayed in a blockhouse that was recommended by his friends.

The blockhouse was on by Rachel's mother. Lewis Robards had tried to keep the marriage going, but he eventually went to Virginia to get a divorce.

According to the Jackson and Donelson story, Rachel and Andrew heard that Lewis Robards had gotten a divorce from her. Really, Robards had just gotten the permission to go to court and ask for a divorce. This only came to light two years after their "marriage", when the divorce actually went through.

As soon as they realized this, the Jacksons went through a second ceremony to ensure the union was legal. A descendant of the Robards family later wrote a book defending Lewis Robards.

Although Rachel wanted children, she never had any. Andrew and Rachel did adopt two sons. The first was Rachel's brother, Severn Donelson's son named Andrew Jackson Jr. Their second Lyncoya who was a Creek Indian adopted by the Jacksons after the Creek War. In addition, the Jacksons were guardians of eight other children.

Rachel sent Andrew a miniature portrait of herself in early 1813. Andrew carried the portrait in the day, and put the portrait on the bedside table when he was sleeping. Andrew was then away leading troops in the the War of 1812.

In 1828, Rachel died after the presidential election and before the his inauguration. Andrew was very depressed about this. One of her favorite nieces, Emily, became first lady.
