Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which rating trains and supervises people in seamanship: marlinspike, boat handling, operation of deck equipment?

Answer: BM - Boatswain's Mate

Boatswain's Mate is one of the oldest naval ratings still in existence. The colloquial name for the rating is "Boats".
2. Which rating works on motors, generators, switchboards and solid state circuitry?

Answer: EM - Electrician's Mate

The official Navy description of the Electrician's Rating badge is a representation of the earth, with lines of latitude & longitude. However, some older sources say it is an early representation of an atom, with the orbits of electrons - seems to fit better with the job.
3. Which rating is responsible for navigation of the ship and maintenance of navigation equipment and records?

Answer: Quartermaster

Quartermasters still exist in the Navy, most recently having absorbed the duties of Signalmen. The Coast Guard merged the ratings of Quartermaster & Boatswain's Mate in 2003, and the new rating is called Boatswain's Mate.
4. Which rating, which no longer exists in either the U.S. Coast Guard or Navy, was responsible for visual communication?

Answer: Signalman

Signalmen (SM) used flashing light, flag hoist, semaphore, pyrotechnics, wig-wag and other methods to send messages between ships in a secure manner. The advent of sophisticated electronic communications proved faster and almost as secure, the Signalmen duties were decreased and combined with other ratings: QMs in the Navy, BMs in the Coast Guard.
5. Which rating deals with administrative work and is colloquially known as "Quills"?

Answer: Yeoman

Yeoman is reportedly the oldest enlisted rating in the U.S. Navy. In general, YNs deal with officer personnel matters while Personellmen deal with enlisted.
6. Which enlisted rating of the U.S. Coast Guard begins at pay grade E-6 after an audition, rather than as an E-1 in Basic Training?

Answer: MU - Musician

Musicians in the Coast Guard as stationed only with the CG Band at the Academy in New London, CT and at the Recruit Training Center in Cape May, NJ. The audition is very competitive, one of the reasons the entering pay is at the higher E-6 level.
7. Which rating badge is made of crossed cannons, with members of the rating disparagingly called "cannon cockers"?

Answer: Gunner's Mate

Gunner's Mate (GM) was one of four ratings created in 1797, all known as "right arm" ratings since they wore their badges on the right arm signifying they were "command" ratings, senior to the other "left arm" ratings. Those ratings were Boatswain's Mate, Quartermaster, Master-at-Arms & Gunner's Mate.
8. This rating badge represents two similar ratings with different names in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. What is the abbreviation for EITHER of those ratings?

Answer: MK

Coast Guard Machinery Technicians (MK) and Navy Enginemen (EN) share the same rating device, a gear. MK is one of only three engineering ratings in the CG, while the Navy has nine engineering ratings, more if you add the specialized ratings in nuclear, aviation and construction.
9. Which rating, known as "ping jockeys", specialize in ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare)?

Answer: Sonar Technician

Sonar Technicians in the U.S. Navy specialize for either service in surface ships (STG) or submarines (STS). The U.S. Coast Guard disestablished the rating in 1993 when the ASW sonars and torpedoes were removed from the larger CG cutters.
10. Which rating, which never existed in the U.S. Coast Guard, was merged with Navy Gunners Mates aboard surface ships and with Machinist Mates aboard submarines?

Answer: TM - Torpedoman's Mate

Torpedoman's Mate is an unusual rating name, since it contains two words that are usually used to refer only to enlisted personnel instead of officers: "man" and "mate". Generally, enlisted ratings that assist related warrant officer specialties have "mate" appended to the name of the warrant officer specialty: Boatswain's Mates assist Boatswains, Gunner's Mates assist Gunners, etc.

The warrant officer specialty of Torpedoman is the only instance of an officer's title containing the word "man".
