What began as one family's misfortune became good fortune for millions of families worldwide.

In 1974, Kim Hill, the 3-year old daughter of Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill, was diagnosed with leukemia.

During Kim's three years of treatment, Fred and his wife Fran often camped out on hospital chairs and benches and ate makeshift meals out of vending machines. The Hills watched other parents around them doing the same thing. They learned that many of the families had traveled great distances to bring their children to the medical facility, but couldn't afford hotel rooms.

The Hills began to think that there had to be a solution. Fred rallied the support of his Eagles teammates to raise funds and help other families experiencing the same emotional and financial traumas as his own. Through Jim Murray, the Eagles' general manager, the team offered its support to Dr. Audrey Evans, head of the pediatric oncology unit at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Evans dreamed of a home-like temporary residence for families of children being treated at her hospital.

Together, they created the first Ronald McDonald House.

That first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia in 1974. By 1979, ten more Houses had opened. By 1984, McDonald's restaurants and local communities founded 60 more Houses; then 53 more opened by 1989. Today (as of 2004), there are nearly 240 Ronald McDonald Houses in 25 countries around the world.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable, supportive alternative for these families. It serves as a temporary residence near the medical facility where family members can sleep, eat, relax and find support from other families in similar situations. In return, families are asked to make a donation ranging from $5 to $20 per day; if that isn't possible, their stay is free.

The Family Room provides some comforts of home to alleviate the anxiety and frustration of the hospital environment. Families use the Family Room to rest, reflect or even freshen up with a shower.

The first Ronald McDonald Family Room opened in 1992 in Kansas City, Kansas. Today, there are 60 Family Rooms in seven countries: the United States, Taiwan, Netherlands, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.

This year, hundreds of thousands of children will go without immunizations and routine physical exams. Pregnant teens will go without the prenatal care they need. And every day, asthma and minor health problems will go undiagnosed until they become acute - when they will be more difficult and more expensive to treat.

RMHC is working to change this. In an effort to provide access to health care for underserved children, Ronald McDonald House Charities has created the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program.

Through relationships with local healthcare providers, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program brings cost effective, high-quality medical and dental care directly to underserved children in both rural and urban areas. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles provide immunizations and health screenings, oral health services, diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease and health education to children who would otherwise go without health care.

Unlike most other "mobile clinics," which are actually converted recreational vehicles, these state-of-the-art Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles are designed and built specifically for the delivery of pediatric health care that's tailored to each community's needs.

Each 40-foot long, 8-foot wide Ronald McDonald Care Mobile houses two patient examination rooms including prenatal exam capabilities, a laboratory, and a reception and medical records area. Some vehicles include a hearing screen booth, while others offer a dental hygiene room - a unique service not typically available in other mobile health care programs.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile staff may consist of a pediatrician, a pediatric nurse, a dentist, a dental hygienist and program manager; other staff members may include a social worker and other pediatric specialists.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles are part of Ronald McDonald House Charities' commitment to finding ways to directly improve the health and well being of children.
The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program helps reduce reliance on expensive and inappropriate health resources, such as hospital emergency departments. The program provides continuity of care by providing follow-up services and referrals to a primary care physician, dentist or pediatric sub-specialist.

Local Chapters of Ronald McDonald House Charities with support from RMHC Global, McDonald's Corporation and McDonald's Owner/Operators, offer scholarships to students from disadvantaged communities who face limited access to educational and career opportunities.
