Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What art-deco masterpiece can be seen in Shamrock, Texas?

Answer: The U-Drop Inn

The U-Drop Inn and its adjoining service station, built in 1936, comprise a great piece of art-deco architecture.
2. In McLean, Texas, there is a museum devoted to "Devil's Rope". What is it better known as?

Answer: barbed wire

This is pronounced "bob-war", and is thought by many to actually be one of the greatest inventions of all time, due to its taming of the West.
3. Groom, Texas, is home to:

Answer: the Blessed Mary Cafe and the largest cross in the western hemisphere.

No kidding! Burgers and truth are served up at the Blessed Mary Cafe, while tourists stop to ogle the HUGE white cross that can be seen for miles around. Groom also has a leaning water tower, but that's another story.
4. At the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, you can get a 72-ounce steak for free if you can eat it plus all the trimmings in sixty minutes or less. Which of these is not part of the meal?

Answer: Cole slaw

A baseball player once downed this mighty feast (which also includes a roll, by the way) in eleven minutes. A wrestler once did it and asked for seconds. If you plan to try it, don't do it on a completely empty stomach. Eat breakfast. If you can't hack it, then order the six-ounce steak--it's just as yummy.
5. How many Cadillacs are stuck headfirst into a field at the "Cadillac Ranch", west of Amarillo?

Answer: Ten

The Cadillac Ranch was erected by pop-art financier Stanley Marsh III. Occasionally repainted, they are usually covered with graffiti.
6. We're halfway to California from Chicago. In what town are we?

Answer: Adrian, TX

The town water proclaims the fact that this is the geomathematical center of Route 66.
7. Tucumcari, New Mexico, is touted as the "City of 2000 Rooms." Which motel is NOT in Tucumcari?

Answer: The Boots Motel

The Boots, which had just closed when we passed through the town of Carthage, Missouri, once hosted such notables as Clark Gable and Gene Autry.
8. Errol Flynn rode his horse into the bar of the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico.

Answer: True

The El Rancho was opened in 1937 and was the on-location home for many of Hollywood's brightest stars, including Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Alan Ladd, Kirk Douglas and Ronald Reagan.
9. What is the only U.S. National Park on the Route?

Answer: The Petrified Forest and Painted Desert

Don't forget to pick up a jar of prickly pear jelly and a piece of petrified wood of your own at the Harvey House gift shop!
10. One of the motels in Holbrook, Arizona, is unique. Why?

Answer: It consists of concrete wigwams.

Have you stayed in a wigwam lately? They're bigger than you think, and very clean and cozy. This was one of my favorite stops.
11. What occurred about 50,000 years ago, nine miles south of the highway, that now rakes in tourist dollars?

Answer: A meteorite struck the Earth.

This great hole is 570 feet deep, three miles in circumference, and nearly a mile from rim to rim.
12. What will the town barber in Seligman, Arizona, Angel Delgadillo, do for Route 66 roadies?

Answer: Cut their hair.

Angel Delgadillo, now retired, is one of the founders of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. His barbershop is now a museum, but he will give roadies a haircut if they ask nicely. The barber chair was bought by Angel's father in 1929 for $196.50.
13. At Angel's brother Juan's Sno-Cap Drive-In down the street, what isn't on the menu?

Answer: Doughnuts

If you go to the Sno-Cap, bring your sense of humor and prepare for a good time. Sit back and watch the show as Juan and family serve up jokes and java. For fun, order a small Coke. Be sure to ask for ice.
14. What wild animals roam the streets of Oatman, Arizona?

Answer: Burros

The burros were turned loose when the gold finally played out. Feed them carrots only! Be careful on the windy road!
15. What famous Hollywood couple spent their honeymoon at the Oatman Hotel?

Answer: Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

You can tour the hotel, said to be haunted by a mischievous ghost, and see the room, if you like. People throw coins on the bed.
16. What is the first town on the west side of the Colorado River?

Answer: Needles

Needles was named for the spiky mountains to the south. Let me know if you know the name of the funny-looking cactus that grows around there.
17. Average rainfall in the Mojave Desert is:

Answer: less than six inches.

But it's a dry heat....
18. What did the famous "Hollywood" sign originally say?

Answer: Hollywoodland

It was originally an advertisement for a real-estate development.
19. Most people think that the road ends at Santa Monica Avenue and Pacific. It actually ends further south, on:

Answer: Santa Monica Pier

The carousel is the one used in the Paul Newman/Robert Redford film, "The Sting".
