Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which highway goes from Sydney, through Melbourne, onward to Adelaide and finishes at Port Augusta?

Answer: Princes Highway

The Princes Highway was named in 1920 after the Prince of Wales who later became the King Edward VIII. He abdicated in 1936 and became the Duke of Windsor.

Interestingly, the highway is part of Australia's Highway 1, but not part of what is called the National Highway. For example, the Hume Highway from Sydney to Melbourne is part of the National Highway and receives higher government funding.
2. The Hume Highway, which goes from Sydney to Melbourne, was named after explorer Hamilton Hume who mapped the inland journey in 1824. Who was the other explorer who went with him?

Answer: William Hovell

The Hume Highway was named in 1928. Before 1928, it was named the "Great South Road" and "Sydney Road".

Lots of money was spent in the last 20 - 30 years to duplicate the highway. The highway goes near and bypasses the following major towns: Goulburn, Yass, Gundagai, Albury, Wangaratta and Seymour.
