Johnny Cash and his band, with the back-up vocal help of the Carter Family and Statler Brothers', performed the first of three free concerts at San Quentin. It was a hit with all, especially Merle Haggard, an inmate. He began pursuing his own singing career after hearing Cash perform. Haggard had been sentenced to 15 years at the tender age of 19 years old for grand theft auto and armed robbery.

He was pardoned in March 1972, having served only three years of his original sentence. He became as famous as Cash in the country music business.

His pardon can be viewed at the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.
