Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the dative singular of 'homo'?

Answer: homini

'Homo' is third declension. Take the genitive singular, 'hominis', drop the 'is' in order the obtain the stem, 'homin', and add an 'i' to get the dative singular.
2. How would you say, 'The boy was driven to the field by the soldiers'?

Answer: Puer ad agrum a militibus actus est.

The boy is 'puer'. 'Ad agrum' translates as to the field; 'ad' is always followed by the accusative. 'A militibus' means by the soldiers; 'militibus' is the ablative of the agent. 'Actus est' (was driven) is passive perfect indicative, which consists of the passive perfect participle and the present tense of the verb 'sum' in an appropriate form.
3. What is the passive present infinitive of the verb 'audire' (to hear)?

Answer: audiri

'Audio' is a verb of the fourth conjugation. The present active infinitive is 'audire'. To form passive past infinitive for fourth conjugation verbs, drop the ending 're', and you will obtain the present stem of the verb (in this case 'audi'); then add 'ri'.
4. What is the the future perfect indicative (3rd person plural) of the verb 'augere' (to increase)?

Answer: auxerint

Take the perfect stem, which in this case is 'aux'; add the future indicative of 'sum'. However, beware, because instead of 'erunt', which is the future indicative of 'sum', it is 'erint' in the 3rd person plural, to avoid confusion with the perfect tense. 'Auxerint' means 'they will have heard.'
5. Pick up the correct form: Sportulum _____ dedit.

Answer: mihi

It means: he gave the gift basket to me. 'Dare' must be preceded by the dative of 'ego', which is 'mihi'.
6. Pick up the correct form: Feminae _______ erant in castris.

Answer: laudatae

'Laudatus' is the passive perfect participle of the verb 'laudare' (to praise). Change 'laudatus' to 'laudatae' in order to agree it with 'feminae', women, which is feminine nominative plural. "The women were praised in the camp."
7. Pick up the correct form: Marcus leges ______ semper non amabat.

Answer: regum

"Marcus did not always love the laws of the kings." You need a genitive here to say the laws of the kings. Use 'regum,' the genitive plural of the noun 'rex' (a king).
8. Pick up the correct form: _____, litteras scribe.

Answer: Luci

"Lucius, write the letters." Use the vocative case. The name Lucius becomes Luci in the vocative.
9. Pick up the correct form: Viri in aquam ______.

Answer: ponuntur

"The men are put into the water." The 3rd person plural of present active indicative of 'pono', to put, is 'ponunt', with the 'unt' as the ending. Add 'untur' to the present stem to convert it to passive ('ponuntur').

.
10. Pick up the correct form (future tense): Inimicos Romanos ________.

Answer: redigemus

"We will drive back the Roman enemies." The 1st person plural of 'redigo', to drive, in the future indicative is 'redigemus'.
