Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start at the beginning. Where was Stalin born?

Answer: Gori

Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia (then part of the Russian Empire) in December 1878. Later, he gave his official birthday as 21 December 1879, which may have been done as an attempt to avoid conscription.
2. Stalin (meaning "Man of Steel") wasn't his real name. What was?

Answer: Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili

Stalin's father was a drunken cobbler called Vissarion Djugashvili and his mother (who doted on her son) was called Ekaterina Geladze.
3. What event in 1892 is said to have had helped make Stalin become a rebel?

Answer: Being present at the public hanging of two criminals

Two Georgian bandits (Sandro Khubuluri and Tato Jioshvili) were hung in Gori on 13 February 1892. Stalin was there because his school had taken all the pupils to witness the execution. The hangings were badly carried out and both men took quite a while to die. Stalin sympathised with the bandits and saw the executions as an example of the oppression of Imperial Russia.
4. What did Stalin's mother hope Stalin would become?

Answer: A priest

Stalin's mother worked hard, and relied on the kindness of family and friends, in order to afford to send him to the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Tiflis. Although he was an extremely bright student, he was expelled for missing his exams in 1899.
5. After leaving school, Stalin took up an unlikely job as a meteorologist. When not working, his political activities soon attracted the attention of the Tsar's secret police. What was their name?

Answer: The Okhrana

The Okhrana (the Division for Protection of Order and Social Security) was created in 1880 under Tsar Alexander II. After the Russian Revolution, the Soviet equivalent was the Cheka, which eventually evolved into the KGB.
6. What was the name of the woman who would become Stalin's first wife?

Answer: Ekaterina Svanidze

Ekaterina Svanidze was a tailor's daughter who married Stalin in 1906. She bore him his first child, Yakov, before dying of typhus in 1907. Stalin stated that, when she died, all his tenderness died with her.
7. In what year did Stalin meet Lenin for the first time?

Answer: 1905

A Bolshevik conference was organised in Tammerfors (Finland) at the end of 1905, the year of the first Russian Revolution. It was here, on Christmas Day, that Stalin and Lenin met for the first time.
8. Stalin was a Bolshevik. From what is the term "Bolshevik" derived?

Answer: Majority

The word "Bolshevik" was derived from a Russian word loosely meaning "majority". The Bolsheviks represented the majority faction in the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. The minority faction were the Mensheviks.
9. In 1912, Stalin was tasked with taking control of a Bolshevik weekly newspaper. What was it called when he took it over?

Answer: Zvezda

After taking over Zvezda, Stalin turned it from a weekly into a daily newspaper and it was renamed "Pravda", meaning "Truth". The editorials that Stalin wrote in the paper angered Lenin and he was removed as its editor at the end of 1912.
10. During his last exile in Turukhansk, Siberia, Stalin started a two year affair with a 13 year old girl.

Answer: True

The 13 year old girl, Lidia Pereprygina, had two children by Stalin, one of whom died in infancy.
