Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sukhoi company was founded in the Soviet Union in 1939. Which of its aircraft was the first to have a jet engine?

Answer: Su-7

The Su-7 (Nato codename: Fitter-A) was designed as a low-level conventional dogfighter, but did not have much success in this role. It was later converted as the Su-7B fighter-bomber and as such became the standard Warsaw Pact ground attack aircraft.
2. On 1st September 1984, Korean Airlines Flight 007 was on its way from New York to Seoul via Anchorage, when the 747 made a navigational error and strayed into Soviet airspace. Sukhoi interceptors were sent up to investigate and a short time later they were given orders to shoot it down. They did, but which designation of aircraft was it?

Answer: Su-15

The Su-15 is a twin-jet interceptor aircraft, which first entered service in 1965. The incident in which the 747 was shot down, killing all 269 passengers and crew, caused an international scandal, and remains highly controversial today.
3. Close air support is low level attack against small targets. Which Sukhoi aircraft was designed for this role?

Answer: Su-25

The Su-25 (Nato codename: Frogfoot) is designed for close air support, which is different from bombing in that you need to be able to fly slowly, to avoid the need to be always overshooting and turning back in. The aircraft can run on petrol and diesel as well as avtur.
4. The Su-15 is an interceptor which had its first flight in 1962. What is its Nato codename?

Answer: Flagon

The Su-15 was a very fast single seat interceptor with a rate of climb of 35,000 feet a minute. It was not designed for dogfighting, but to shoot down large bombers such as the US B-52s.
5. In 1969 the Soviet Union learned of the U.S. Air Force's F-X Program which resulted in the F-15 Eagle. Which aircraft did Sukhoi develop to counter it?

Answer: Su-27

The Su-27 (Nato codename: Flanker) was introduced into service in 1985, and was still in service 30 years later. It has very good all-round capability in BVR engagements (Beyond Visual Range) and dogfights.
6. The Su-30 is a turbofan fighter that entered service in 1996. Does it have thrust vectoring nozzles?

Answer: Yes

There are a number of variants of the SU-30 in service, one of which (the SU-30MKI) was developed jointly by Russia and India, and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for the Indian Air Force. This variant entered service in September 2002, and has the NATO code Flanker-H.
7. Variable geometry is a feature whereby the wings of an aircraft can be shifted from front to back, to give the best performance in different flight regimes (as does the F-14 Tomcat). What was the first Sukhoi aircraft with this?

Answer: Su-17

The Su-17 (Nato codename: Fitter-C) first flew in August 1966 and had a very primitive form of variable geometry where the outer portions of the wings moved. It was subsequently developed into a number of different aircraft, such as the the SU-20 and Su-22.
8. The Su-24 was the first Sukhoi aircraft to have "proper" variable geometry. What was its role?

Answer: Low-level tactical bomber

The Su-24 (Nato codename: Fencer) was a low level tactical bomber which was introduced into service in 1974, and for a period in the 70s was considered a real threat to western ground forces.
9. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 was Sukhoi's first airliner. When did it enter service?

Answer: 2011

The Sukhoi Superjet 100's cockpit was quite similar to that of the the A320, for easy transition with side sticks and big computer screens.
10. The PAK FA is a stealth multi-role aircraft developed by Sukhoi. When was the prototype's first flight?

Answer: 2010

At the time of its introduction, the PAK FA was one of the fastest military aircraft (1560 mph), with over 60,000 pounds of thrust. Its advanced avionics made it very technologically advanced.
