Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cultural group is usually identified with this weapon, whose name is derived from an Algonquian word meaning 'cutting utensil'?

Answer: Native Americans

The tomahawk is a Native American hacking and throwing weapon. There were many different varieties, some with metal blades and some with stone. All had similar shaped blades that were attached to a wooden handle and decorated in a variety of ways depending on the status of the owner. Unlike many other types of ax, these weapons were suitable for warfare but usually not for daily work such as chopping wood.
2. Called 'Fat Man' just what type of weapon is depicted in this black-and-white photo?

Answer: Atomic bomb

'Fat Man' was the code name for the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 8, 1945. Over 120 of these weapons were made between 1945-1949 and were an implosion-type nuclear weapon filled with plutonium. This bomb missed its intended detonation point by almost two miles because of the heavy cloud cover in the area.

When it detonated it killed approximately 40,000 instantly, with thousands more dying later from burns and radiation. Had the target been hit more directly, it is possible that these numbers might have been much higher.
3. What is the common English term for the one-handed weapon that consisted of a short stick or club with one or more spiked balls attached with a chain?

Answer: Flail

A flail is an old weapon that consisted of a thick stick with a heavy metal ball attached by a chain or, at one time, by a heavy rope, or leather. The flail was commonly used during hand-to-hand combat during the European Middle Ages. The weighted metal ball was sometimes spiked to ensure maximum damage when contact was made.

The are some old depictions showing this weapon with two metal balls instead of just one.
4. What is the proper name of this Japanese throwing instrument?

Answer: Shuriken

The Japanese shuriken is a type of concealed weapon that has been used for centuries. There are a huge variety of designs that are usually associated with different geographical regions. This unique weapon was usually used by throwing it from a distance, but could be used in hand-to hand combat by using a slicing motion. The other three options are varieties of popular Japanese soups.
5. The kusarigama is an example of an ancient traditional weapon from which of the following countries?

Answer: Japan

The Japanese kusarigama is basically a sickle with a heavy metal ball weight attached by a chain. This ancient weapon was used for centuries during hand-to-hand combat. The weighted chain was swung over the head and then thrust towards the enemy in an attempt to grab the opponents weapons from his hand.

The bladed part of the weapon was then used to kill the enemy with wide cutting movements. Though simple in design, this was a very effective weapon in hand-to-hand fighting.
6. On which continent would you most likely be if you see a bola perdida being used?

Answer: South America

Bolas are a very old hand weapon that has been used for hunting for hundreds of years. The amount of balls and their weights differ depending on what is being hunted. The bola perdida was used as a weapon of war mainly in the Pampas and northern Patagonia.

They were very popular and very effective against the horses of the European invaders. The cords were/are usually made of cord, leather, or vines. The weights at the end were often simple wooden balls, but some varieties used a small pouch of rocks. Most bolas had 2-3 weights, but there have been some found that had more than seven. Bolas are a nice example of human ingenuity.
7. The common name for this weapon is a toe knife.

Answer: False

This weapon is usually called "brass knuckles" or "knuckle duster" and is worn on the hand to inflict maximum damage when punching someone. The fingers slip through the holes and the hand fits around the lower palm grip to help hold it in place. The weapon was designed to protect the hand during contact with the opponents face and the palm grip helped to absorb some of the counter-force that occurs when punching the jaw with this weapon.
8. The hand grenade was first invented by Belgian gunsmith Pierre-Louise Grenade in 1914, during World War I.

Answer: False

This is completely false. Hand grenades of various types have been used for centuries. Early models were made of clay, ceramic, and glass. They were used in ancient Europe, Asia, and Africa and are believed to have originated in China around the same time as gunpowder. Basically, a hand grenade is a small hand-held bomb.

There are several different types of grenades including concussion, fragmentation, sting and flash varieties.
9. What is the proper term for the handle part of a sword?

Answer: Hilt

The handle of a sword is known as a hilt. It usually consists of the pommel which is the rounded end of the hilt, which derives its name from the Latin word for 'apple'. The 'grip' is the main part of the hilt, around which the swordsman holds the weapon.

The guard is the piece of metal which lies perpendicular to the blade and is there to keep the hand from slipping down the blade during use. The hilt may be simple or extremely ornate depending on the status of the user.
10. Which of the following is the proper term for the sheath that holds a sword?

Answer: Scabbard

Often seen hanging from a belt, a scabbard is a holder for a bladed weapon such as a knife or a sword. While some are purely utile in design, there are others which are works of art. The scabbard, no matter what its design, was primarily used to protect the finely honed blade of the weapon.

Some were made of leather while others were made of semi-precious metals with jewels. The scabbard made carrying the weapon easy and convenient.
